Sturgeon in Stardew Valley: Where to Catch It, Best Season, and Tips

Alex MercerAlex Mercer|

You’ll catch Sturgeon at Mountain Lake during Summer and Winter from 6 AM to 7 PM, making it one of the most rewarding but challenging fish in Stardew Valley.

This legendary fish isn’t just tough to catch — it’s your ticket to caviar production and completing the Lake Fish Bundle. With a difficulty rating of 78, the Sturgeon demands patience and the right strategy.

Season Time Weather Location Difficulty
Summer, Winter 6 AM – 7 PM Any Mountain Lake 78 (Hard)

Where to Catch Sturgeon

Mountain Lake is your only option for Sturgeon — there’s literally nowhere else in the valley to find this fish. Head north from your farm through the mountains, past the carpenter’s shop and up to the lake.

The entire lake counts as valid Sturgeon territory, so you don’t need to worry about finding the perfect spot. Cast anywhere along the shoreline and you’ll have the same chance of hooking one.

Don’t waste time trying other locations like the river or ocean. Sturgeon are exclusively lake dwellers in Stardew Valley, and Mountain Lake is the only lake deep enough to support them.

When to Catch Sturgeon

Sturgeon follow a strict seasonal schedule — Summer and Winter only, from 6 AM to 7 PM. You’ve got 13 hours each day during these two seasons to land one.

Weather doesn’t matter at all. Rain, sun, or storms — Sturgeon bite regardless of conditions. This actually makes them more reliable than weather-dependent fish like Catfish or Eel.

The best approach is focusing your Sturgeon hunting during Summer since you’ll have more daylight hours and easier access to the mountain area. Winter works too, but the shorter days can feel limiting when you’re already dealing with a difficult catch.

How to Catch Sturgeon

With a difficulty of 78, Sturgeon rank among the hardest fish in the game. You’ll want Fishing level 6 minimum before attempting these seriously, though level 8+ gives you much better odds.

Trap Bobber is your best friend here — it slows down the fish’s escape rate when the bar isn’t on target. Cork Bobber works too if you need the extra bar size, but Trap Bobber’s forgiveness usually wins out.

The Sturgeon’s movement pattern is absolutely chaotic. It’ll dart up and down unpredictably, pause for half a second, then rocket to the opposite end of the bar. Stay calm and don’t overcorrect — small, controlled movements work better than frantic clicking.

Iridium Rod with bait and tackle is necessary. The extra bar size from the better rod makes the difference between success and rage-quitting.

Sturgeon Uses

The Lake Fish Bundle requires one Sturgeon to complete, unlocking the bridge to the quarry. This bundle is often the last one players finish because of how tough Sturgeon can be.

Fish Ponds transform Sturgeon into a money-printing machine. A mature Sturgeon pond produces caviar every 4 days, selling for 200g each. With 10 Sturgeon, that’s 500g every 4 days for basically zero effort.

Sturgeon also work in cooking recipes like Sashimi (75g) and Maki Roll (220g). The Maki Roll actually sells for more than the raw fish, making it worth the rice investment if you’ve got surplus Sturgeon.

As gifts, Sturgeon are universally liked except by a few villagers. Not the most exciting present, but decent friendship points if you’re desperate.

Tips for Catching Sturgeon

Save your game before heading to Mountain Lake. If you’re burning through energy and bait without success, just reload and try again. This saves tons of time and resources.

Bring food for energy restoration — you’ll likely need multiple attempts. Salmonberries, cactus fruit, or cheaper energy foods work perfectly since you’re just maintaining stamina.

Fish during the early morning (6-8 AM) when you’re fresh and focused. Your real-world concentration matters more with difficult fish like Sturgeon than with easier catches.

Don’t stress about perfect catches initially. Getting your first Sturgeon for the bundle is more important than maximizing quality. Once you’ve got the technique down, then worry about gold-star catches.

Consider waiting until you have better gear and higher fishing skill if you’re struggling. There’s no rush to complete the bundle immediately — Sturgeon will still be there when you’re better prepared.

Multiple casts in the same spot can work, but sometimes moving around the lake helps reset the RNG. If you’ve gone 20+ casts without seeing a Sturgeon, try a different section of shoreline.

What’s the easiest way to catch Sturgeon?

Use Trap Bobber tackle on an Iridium Rod with bait, fish during Summer at Mountain Lake, and make sure you’re at least Fishing level 6. Save before fishing attempts to avoid wasting energy on failed catches.

Can I catch Sturgeon in other locations besides Mountain Lake?

No, Mountain Lake is the only location where Sturgeon spawn. You can’t find them in rivers, ocean, or any other water body in Stardew Valley.

Is Sturgeon caviar worth the investment?

Absolutely — Sturgeon Fish Ponds produce caviar every 4 days, generating consistent passive income. A full pond of 10 Sturgeon nets you 500g every 4 days, making it one of the best late-game money sources.
