Eel in Stardew Valley: Where to Find It, When to Catch It, and Recipes

Alex MercerAlex Mercer|

Catch Eel in the Ocean during rainy nights (4 PM – 2 AM) in Spring and Fall — one of the most weather-dependent fish in Stardew Valley, but the Spicy Eel recipe makes it worth the effort.

The Eel is quite challenging to catch consistently due to three specific conditions: the right season, rain, and nighttime. Once you master the timing, you’ll gain access to one of the best food buffs in the game. The Spicy Eel provides +1 Luck and +1 Speed, making it great for Skull Cavern runs.

Where to Catch Eel

You can only catch Eel in the Ocean, which means the beach south of your farm or the tide pools area if you’ve unlocked them. The main beach is your best option — head to the long wooden pier or fish from the shoreline rocks.

The tide pools work too, but the beach pier offers more consistent results. Avoid trying the river, mountain lake, or secret woods — it’s Ocean only for this slippery fish.

When to Catch Eel

Season Time Weather Location Difficulty
Spring, Fall 4 PM – 2 AM Rain only Ocean 70 (Hard)

The Eel appears only during rainy evenings and nights in Spring and Fall. Summer and Winter are off-limits, so don’t waste your time. Start fishing after 4 PM — any earlier and you won’t find them.

Rain is mandatory. Without rain, there are no Eels. Check the weather forecast on TV every morning and plan your fishing trips around rainy Spring and Fall days. The 4 PM to 2 AM window gives you ample time, but don’t start too late or you’ll miss the prime hours.

How to Catch Eel

With a difficulty rating of 70, Eel is genuinely hard to catch. Its movement pattern is erratic and unpredictable — it darts up and down quickly, then suddenly stops. Your fishing skill should be at least level 3-4 for a decent shot, though level 6+ makes it much easier.

Use Cork Bobbers if you’re having trouble with the timing. The extra bar size helps a lot with erratic fish like Eel. Trap Bobbers are also useful if you keep losing the fish during sudden direction changes.

Using an Iridium Rod with bait speeds up the process significantly. You’ll cast many times waiting for Eel to bite, so anything that increases bite frequency is helpful. Quality Bobbers enhance your catch quality, turning those base 85g Eels into 170g iridium ones.

Eel Uses

The Night Fishing Bundle at the Community Center requires one Eel. Completing this bundle unlocks the Recycling Machine, which turns trash into useful materials. This bundle can be annoying due to its weather dependency.

Fried Eel is the basic recipe (Eel + Oil), but Spicy Eel is where the real benefit lies. Eel + Hot Pepper creates the best food buff for dangerous mine runs — +1 Luck increases rare drop chances, and +1 Speed helps you navigate faster.

Several villagers appreciate Spicy Eel as a gift, including Abigail, Sebastian, and Sam. It’s costly to make but shows thoughtfulness. Regular Eel works for Sashimi too if you have the recipe.

Eel Ponds aren’t particularly profitable. They produce Roe every 4 days, but the initial investment and maintenance aren’t worth it compared to other fish. Stick to catching wild Eels for recipes and bundles.

Tips for Catching Eel

Stock up on Rain Totems from the Desert Trader if you’re feeling impatient. Five Hardwood guarantees rain the next day, allowing you to force Eel fishing sessions. This is especially useful in Fall when opportunities are running out.

Fish from the pier during storms — the extended wooden dock at the beach provides deeper water and better catch rates. Avoid fishing from the shallow areas near the tide pools unless necessary.

Bring plenty of bait. Eel has a low spawn rate even under perfect conditions, so you’ll cast numerous times before catching one. I usually bring over 100 bait for serious Eel hunting sessions.

Level up your fishing skill on easier fish first. Trying to catch Eel at fishing level 1-2 can be frustrating. Aim for level 5+ with Carp and Sardines before tackling the more challenging fish.

The best strategy is to catch multiple Eels during prime rainy nights, then save them for Spicy Eel recipes. A good storm can yield 5-10 Eels if you fish the entire 4 PM to 2 AM window.

Can you catch Eel without rain?

No, rain is required. Eel never spawns on sunny days, regardless of the season or time you fish.

What’s the best tackle for catching Eel?

Cork Bobber for a larger fishing bar, or Trap Bobber if you keep losing fish during their erratic movements. Both make the difficulty rating of 70 more manageable.

Is Spicy Eel worth making?

Absolutely — +1 Luck and +1 Speed make it the top food buff for Skull Cavern runs. The luck boost significantly increases rare drop chances, and speed helps you cover more ground quickly.
