Music and Entrepreneurship – Miss Money Tells the Tale of Two Contrasting Worlds

2 min

It is said that in nature, opposites attract. While some succumb to the turmoil of opposing forces within, others make it their strength and carve out new niches for themselves.

Meteoric Rise

Perhaps no one tells the tale better than Miss Money, the rapper from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Born Kimberly Ward, her life’s journey illustrates how the complexities and vagaries of life cannot snuff out true creativity and talent.

Miss Money has been globally recognized as having a unique flair when it comes to rap, and she continues to take her career to new heights in the US and beyond. Along with her musical career she is also actively engaged in giving back to the community through social service and entrepreneurship, striving to give people the hope and encouragement they need.

Hailing from the poverty-stricken area of Hill District, Miss Money had a far from ideal upbringing. Separated at an early age from her biological parents, she spent the better part of her life in foster care and detention centers. Yet, an agile and active mind allowed her to find her own creative passions which resonated across the musical landscape and into her entrepreneurial journey.

Daring and rebellious, Miss Money has managed to challenge social norms and the status quo from early on in her life. Her musical journey has taken her along to work with some of the major names in the musical scene such as Cardi B and Wiz Khalifa.

Her own solo works feature the culture theme song On The Nephs, which has created waves over all major radio and TV channels in South Africa. She was also featured in an article by The Saturday Punch. Her latest releases include Mrs. Parker, and Pull-Up, a single she has worked on with celebrity rapper Boosie Badazz that is scheduled for release around late summer this year.

Miss Money has found herself in legal trouble more than once in her life, but this has not been able to deter her from following her dreams. 2011 saw her discovered by A&R’s Ferrer Fabienne and being signed on by Madison Music (Sony), the record label in Paris.

The Eager Entrepreneur

Her musical career has only been complemented by her entrepreneurial side.  Her movement Rich Chickz has grown into a successful clothing line, expanding itself far beyond Miss Money’s expectations. She has also recently partnered with Alive Shoes for launching her limited-edition footwear brand Rich Kickz, which has already taken the market by storm.

Miss Money attributes her success to her life experiences and her musical gift. “I wouldn’t say I chose this career; rather it chose me. I continue to strive in this career to give expression to the voice and message of those coming from the same background as I am. It has become, in a way, rewarding as well as therapeutic.”

Miss Money’s colorful life proves that music and entrepreneurship can be but two sides of the same coin. And no matter how many curveballs life throws at one, true talent and perseverance always wins.
