10 Best Netflix Shows Not Available in the US

3 min

There’s nothing worse than hearing about a hot new show and realizing that you have no way to watch it. The series isn’t available in your country. So, there’s no Netflix and chill for you, my friend.

According to data from Finder, Netflix US has more titles than Netflix UK, for example. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Netflix US has the best titles. In fact, there are lots of amazing shows that we can’t watch.

But I’m going to share a little insider tip with you… There are VPNs that work with Netflix, meaning that you can unlock a bunch of hidden content. Here are the best shows you can unlock:

1. Luther

Starring the legend and heartthrob Idris Elba, Luther is a gritty British drama about a murder detective who doesn’t always follow the letter of the law himself. This is not one to watch before bedtime as it can be more than a little dark and creepy. But once you start watching Luther you’ll want to binge as the series is super addictive.

Available on Netflix UK, France and Germany.

2. RuPaul’s Drag Race

Start your engines sis. This is a groundbreaking and Emmy-winning reality TV show you do not want to miss. Iconic entertainer RuPaul invites drag queens from all over the US to compete for the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar. It’s a bit like Top Model but with quirky queens.

Available on Netflix UK.

3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

This hilarious and modern sitcom stars a number of brilliant actors including Terry Crews and Adam Samberg. The show follows a bunch of happy-go-lucky detectives as they fight crime on the streets of Brooklyn. You will fall in love with the characters and remember their witty one-liners for days.

Available on Netflix everywhere but the US.

4. Modern Family

Watch the Dunphy and Pritchett families as they navigate modern life and get up to all kinds of hijinks. As much as this sitcom is comedic, it’s also hugely relatable. Sofia Vergara plays a stand-out part as the feisty stepmom in this laugh a minute show.

Available on Netflix France, Germany, the Netherlands and Greece.

5. Orphan Black

Orphan Black is one of the best sci-fi shows to have graced our screens in recent years. The series sees Tatiana Maslany take on a number of different roles, which really showcases her acting chops. It’s hard to find shows that are unique nowadays. But trust me, this series is one of a kind… even if its characters are not.

Available on Netflix UK, Brazil, France and Germany.

6. Star Trek: Discovery

Calling all Trekkies, you need to watch this prequel to the beloved sci-fi show. If you’re a fan of the Star Trek franchise, the show will feel familiar but at the same time fresh. And if you weren’t previously a fan of the show, you’ll still enjoy this modern take on a classic.

Available on Netflix everywhere but the US and Canada.

7. Archer

This cartoon (for adults) epitomizes weird and wonderful. The show centers on a ragtag group of secret agents and their misadventures. It touches on the old tropes of spy movies, such as James Bond, while being totally zany and original. Archer is truly a hidden gem, so if you haven’t watched it yet – get on it, already.

Available on Netflix UK.

8. Louis Theroux

Louis Theroux has made a number of fascinating documentaries over the years, with titles such as The Most Hated Family in America and Miami Mega Jail. What makes Theroux’s work so interesting is his enigmatic personality. The guy is unbelievably intelligent, yet appears naive to the ways of the world and it’s often hard to tell whether to take his words seriously or not.

Available on Netflix UK.

9. How I Met Your Mother

Considering the fact that How I Met Your Mother is such a popular staple, it’s strange not to have it on Netflix US. The comedy is told in the form of flashbacks from the perspective of Ted, a hopeless romantic. He and his gang of best friends are lovable characters that always bring the laughs.

Available on Netflix UK, France, Germany and Canada.

10. The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory has just finished its twelfth season, owing to the immense popularity of the show. Everybody and their grandparents has watched Big Bang at some point. The sitcom follows a bunch of adorable geeks and outsiders as they try to cope with social situations, work, friendships and (eek!) women.

Available on Netflix UK and Greece.
