Microsoft Surface Laptop 8 and Pro 12 Launch with Snapdragon X2

Daniel ParkBy Daniel Park·

Microsoft has just launched the Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12, two updated Windows devices featuring Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X2 chips. These models start at $1,499 with 16GB of RAM, which is quite a jump from previous prices.

These new devices follow the 2024 Surface lineup that debuted with Snapdragon X1 processors. This lineup also marked the beginning of Microsoft’s Copilot Plus PC initiative. According to The Verge, these are the first consumer-focused Surface devices equipped with Qualcomm’s upgraded Snapdragon X2 chip, designed for lightweight Windows PCs.

What’s New This Generation

Along with the chip upgrade, Microsoft is introducing a new jade green color option, in addition to the existing finishes. The Surface Laptop 8 now features haptic feedback on its touchpad. This technology, common in MacBooks, adds precision to clicks through tiny vibrations instead of relying on a physical button.

As XDA Developers notes, the Snapdragon X2 offers improved performance and efficiency compared to the X1. This should mean better battery life and quicker everyday tasks, although Microsoft hasn’t released specific benchmark comparisons yet.

Both devices run Windows on ARM, which uses a chip architecture similar to smartphones rather than traditional Intel or AMD laptops. Microsoft’s software now manages this switch mostly in the background, but some older Windows apps may still need emulation to run properly.

The Price Jump Is Hard to Ignore

This is where it gets tricky. As Engadget highlights, the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop are about 50 to 60 percent pricier than the previous generation. The 2024 models started at a more reasonable price, making this year’s $1,499 starting point a notable increase of around $500 to $600 depending on which model you choose.

This pricing puts these devices in direct competition with Apple’s MacBook Air and Pro lineup, which has long dominated the premium thin-and-light market. For $1,499, you get 16GB of RAM, which is now considered a standard starting point for AI features. Just two years ago, that amount was common on much cheaper machines.

What This Means for Everyday Users

If you purchased a Surface device in 2024, you probably don’t need to upgrade just yet. The Snapdragon X2 is indeed faster and more efficient than the X1, but for everyday tasks like browsing, emailing, or video calls, the difference isn’t huge.

For anyone looking to buy a new Windows laptop right now, the price hike is the biggest news. At $1,499, you’re paying more for Microsoft’s design, the new chip, and the AI features bundled with Copilot Plus PCs. These include real-time transcription, AI-generated image tools, and the Recall feature, which lets you search through your PC’s history. Whether these features justify the price over a solid $999 Windows laptop really depends on how you use your computer.

The haptic touchpad on the Surface Laptop 8 is a worthwhile upgrade for those who often use their laptops without a mouse. Anyone who’s used a modern MacBook will appreciate the improved feel right away.

Community Reactions

“$1,499 starting price for a Surface? Microsoft has completely lost the plot. The whole appeal of the Surface line was that it was a premium but attainable Windows option. This is just Apple pricing without Apple’s software ecosystem.”

“To be fair, 16GB base RAM is what it should have been from day one. The 8GB configurations on the old Surface laptops were embarrassing for the price. Still expensive though.”

What To Watch

  • Benchmark results: Expect independent performance tests comparing the Snapdragon X2 to the X1 and Apple’s M4 chip to appear soon as reviewers get their hands on the devices.
  • Availability date: Microsoft hasn’t confirmed specific shipping dates yet. Keep an eye out for pre-order windows to open shortly after this announcement.
  • Competitor response: With Microsoft raising prices, watch to see if Dell, HP, and Lenovo adjust their own Snapdragon X2 device pricing to stay competitive.
  • Copilot Plus feature rollout: Microsoft is gradually expanding the AI features exclusive to Copilot Plus PCs. The Surface Laptop 8 and Pro 12 will be among the first to receive these updates through Windows Update.
