Capcom has introduced a free Eternal Ferrystone in Dragon’s Dogma 2. This infinite-use fast travel item comes after players expressed frustration over tedious traversal in the game. The update arrives about two years after the RPG launched in March 2024.
The Eternal Ferrystone becomes available automatically after reaching a specific story checkpoint. Players won’t need to spend gold or complete any dungeon runs to get it. Before this, players had to farm single-use Ferrystones or pay 10,000 gold for each one. Fast travel was also intentionally limited as part of the game’s design. Shacknews reports that this new item completely removes the hassle for players who hit the right story point.
Capcom originally designed the limited fast travel system to keep players engaged with the game’s world and its monster encounters. Director Hideaki Itsuno defended this choice, but it didn’t resonate with everyone. Currently, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has a 66% positive rating on Steam, based on 59,390 reviews. This “Mixed” rating indicates ongoing dissatisfaction with various game mechanics.
The timing of this update coincides with the announcement of Dark Arisen, a PS5 expansion set for October 2026. Capcom clearly has a commercial motive to enhance player sentiment before releasing new content. Adding a quality-of-life item is a low-cost way to improve goodwill. PC Gamer pointed out that the studio waited as long as they could before making this change.
It’s unclear if this update will significantly impact the Steam rating. The game has only 2,992 concurrent players right now, which is modest for a $69.99 title from a major publisher. To re-engage players who’ve stepped away, Capcom will need to do more than just tweak a single item.
| Release Date | March 21, 2024 |
| Steam Review Score | 66% positive (Mixed) |
| Total Steam Reviews | 59,390 |
| Current Steam Players | 2,992 |
| Current Price (Steam) | $69.99 |
| Dark Arisen Expansion (PS5) | October 2026 |
Community reaction to the update has been more skeptical than enthusiastic. One Steam reviewer commented, “They abandoned the game for 2 years, and suddenly woke up, only because they have a DLC to sell you. Do you think they will update the game/fix bugs after they release DLC? No.” This sentiment, suggesting that post-launch support is driven by profit rather than player interest, appears frequently in recent reviews and highlights a broader “Mostly Negative” trend in current player feedback.
What To Watch
- Steam rating movement: Keep an eye on whether the Eternal Ferrystone update leads to a surge of revised or new positive reviews. This could help lift the game out of “Mixed” status ahead of the expansion.
- Further QoL patches: Fast travel wasn’t the only system that faced criticism at launch. Players also raised concerns about performance issues, the Dragonsplague mechanic, and limited save slots. If Capcom addresses these before Dark Arisen releases, it’ll show how committed they are to ongoing support.
- Dark Arisen pricing and scope: The PS5 expansion in October 2026 doesn’t have a confirmed price yet. Given the base game’s $69.99 price tag and the community’s concerns about monetization, how Capcom presents the DLC will greatly influence its reception.
