Nvidia DLSS 5 Announced: AI Rendering Takes Another Leap

Marcus WebbBy Marcus Webb·

Nvidia has officially unveiled DLSS 5, claiming it’s the biggest leap in their AI-powered rendering technology since the original Deep Learning Super Sampling debuted in 2018. This new system goes beyond traditional upscaling. It uses a fully neural rendering model to reconstruct entire frames instead of just enhancing rasterized output.

DLSS 5 introduces “Neural Rendering,” moving away from the hybrid approach seen in DLSS 3 and 4. Unlike earlier versions that used AI to upscale or generate intermediate frames from already rendered data, DLSS 5 employs a neural model throughout the entire rendering pipeline. This effectively replaces traditional shading passes with AI-inferred versions. Nvidia asserts that this results in a visual fidelity breakthrough that adding more raw GPU cores can’t achieve.

This technology arrives at a time when GPU pricing and performance-per-dollar are hot topics. Historically, DLSS has given Nvidia a strong edge over AMD and Intel, and DLSS 5 aims to widen that gap. AMD’s FSR 4, released earlier in 2025, also utilizes machine learning but is limited to certain RDNA 4 hardware. In contrast, Nvidia markets DLSS 5 as compatible with its RTX 40 and RTX 50 series cards.

PCMag UK’s hands-on review raised an important question: does DLSS 5’s neural output represent a true rendering advancement or is it more like a complex post-process filter? This distinction matters for competitive and latency-sensitive situations, where AI-generated frame data could introduce artifacts or input lag that raw rasterization avoids. Nvidia hasn’t yet released full latency figures for DLSS 5 in Performance and Ultra Performance modes.

At launch, game support is limited. Nvidia has confirmed a small selection of titles. Among them, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which launched on March 20, 2025, is expected to get a DLSS 5 patch. The game is currently available on Steam for $0.99, though Ubisoft hasn’t announced a specific rollout date. It’s drawn attention for other reasons too, including an ongoing controversy over DLC pricing that has led to mostly negative community feedback on Steam.

By The Numbers
DLSS First Released 2018 (RTX 20 series)
DLSS 5 Supported Hardware RTX 40 & RTX 50 series
AC Shadows Release Date March 20, 2025
AC Shadows Current Steam Price $0.99
AC Shadows DLC Cost (100% completion) ~$90 USD

Community reactions to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, one of the first DLSS 5 titles, focus less on rendering quality. One Steam reviewer commented: “Avoid. If you hunt for 100% completions, get ready to shell out $90 USD in DLC to snag that last achievement for that hundo.” This aggressive DLC pricing has overshadowed player discussions and will likely dampen engagement, regardless of how impressive the game looks with DLSS 5.

What To Watch

  • Latency data: Nvidia hasn’t provided comprehensive frame timing and input latency benchmarks for DLSS 5’s lower quality modes. Independent lab results will reveal whether the neural pipeline is suitable for competitive play.
  • Game adoption pace: DLSS 4’s Multi Frame Generation took months to show up in major titles post-announcement. Keep an eye on how quickly AAA developers integrate DLSS 5’s neural rendering SDK compared to sticking with the more established DLSS 4 route.
  • AMD and Intel response: FSR 4 and XeSS 2 will face direct competition from DLSS 5’s features. Both companies are likely to update their roadmaps at upcoming hardware events later in 2025.
