YouTube TV Custom Multiview Is Live — With Some Catches

Ava MitchellBy Ava Mitchell·

YouTube TV subscribers can now watch up to four live channels at the same time in a custom layout. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced this feature on Tuesday.

Called custom multiview, this feature allows you to pin any combination of live streams into one split-screen window. Previously, YouTube TV’s multiview only let you use curated sports packages that the company selected for you. Now, you can create your own personalized view.

What Custom Multiview Actually Does

It’s like picture-in-picture, but you can watch up to four channels at once. Instead of flipping through a football game, a news channel, and a golf tournament, you can enjoy all three (plus one more) on the same screen simultaneously.

Neal Mohan described it as giving users “full control to mix and match live streams” to “build the personalized viewing experience you’ve been asking for.” This change directly responds to years of requests from subscribers, especially sports fans wanting to follow multiple games at once.

This feature isn’t just for sports; it works across YouTube TV’s entire channel lineup. Want to keep a news channel on while watching two sports games and a cooking show? Now you can do that.

Where It Doesn’t Work

However, there’s a catch: custom multiview isn’t available everywhere. According to 9to5Google, the feature has some platform limitations that YouTube TV outlined during the launch. It’s currently limited to certain devices. So, if you’re using an unsupported platform, you won’t see the option.

YouTube TV hasn’t widely shared the complete list of compatible devices, so if you don’t see it, your streaming device or smart TV might not support it yet. The best way to check is by looking at the YouTube TV app on a compatible device, like some smart TVs or streaming sticks.

Why This Took So Long

YouTube TV first rolled out a limited version of multiview back in 2023. But it only worked with specific, pre-packaged sports combinations that YouTube chose. For example, subscribers could watch four NFL games at once but couldn’t swap in a different channel they actually wanted.

Creating fully custom multiview means YouTube had to negotiate more complex rights with broadcasters. When you use a streaming service, the rights holder has agreed to specific terms about how that content appears. Allowing users to freely mix channels in a split-screen format requires agreements from several content partners at once, which can take time to arrange.

What This Means

For everyday YouTube TV subscribers, this upgrade genuinely improves the viewing experience. It’s especially useful for sports fans juggling multiple games on a Sunday afternoon or anyone who likes to keep a news channel running in the background.

The main advantage? Fewer remotes, less app-switching, and reduced anxiety about missing something on another channel. You can set up your four tiles and let them play.

On the downside, device limitations could be an issue. If you’ve been using YouTube TV on an older smart TV or a less common streaming device, you might need to wait for broader rollout or switch to a compatible device. It’s worth checking before getting too excited about changing your Sunday viewing setup.

This also makes YouTube TV a stronger competitor to traditional cable packages, which have allowed split-screen sports viewing for years. For cord-cutters who’ve ditched cable in favor of streaming, this is a win.

What Subscribers Are Saying

“Finally. I’ve been asking for this since they launched the original multiview. Being forced to watch only the games YouTube picked for me was so frustrating during NFL playoffs.”

“Cool feature but of course it doesn’t work on my Vizio. Guess I need to upgrade my TV to use a feature I’m already paying $73 a month for.”

What To Watch

  • Device support expansion: YouTube TV hasn’t announced a timeline for bringing custom multiview to all platforms. Keep an eye on the app’s release notes or YouTube TV’s official blog for updates.
  • Competitor response: Hulu + Live TV and DirecTV Stream don’t currently offer a similar custom multiview. If this feature gains popularity, expect competitors to feel pressure to follow suit.
  • Sports season timing: With the NFL season kicking off in September, YouTube TV has a strong incentive to expand device support before then. Summer 2026 seems like a likely timeframe for broader rollout announcements.
  • Content rights expansion: The bigger question remains whether YouTube TV can negotiate rights to include every channel in multiview. Some broadcasters might opt out, which could leave gaps in the channels you can actually combine.
