YouTube Picture-in-Picture Is Now Free for Everyone Globally

Maya TorresBy Maya Torres·

YouTube is launching free picture-in-picture (PiP) mode worldwide on both Android and iOS. This marks the end of a long period when the feature was only available to Premium subscribers or limited to users in the U.S.

What Is Picture-in-Picture, Exactly?

Picture-in-picture allows you to minimize a video into a small floating window. This window stays on your screen while you use other apps. Imagine having a tiny TV in the corner while you scroll through messages or check your calendar. Up until now, YouTube restricted this feature mainly to paying subscribers in most countries.

Who Gets What

The rollout varies based on your device and whether you have a YouTube Premium subscription, which costs $13.99 per month and removes ads while unlocking extra features.

iPhone and iPad Users

Free users outside the U.S. are getting PiP for the first time. Previously, Apple required all apps to support PiP on iOS, but YouTube had limited it to Premium subscribers. With this update, if you’re using an iPhone or iPad and aren’t a Premium member, you can now watch YouTube videos while using other apps.

Android Users

Free PiP is also rolling out globally on Android. YouTube had begun testing and releasing free PiP to some Android users in select regions, but this announcement expands access to a wider audience around the world.

Premium Subscribers

If you already subscribe to YouTube Premium, you’ll still have access to PiP, and there are no changes to that. Premium subscribers also keep their other benefits, such as ad-free viewing and background play, which lets audio continue even when your screen is off.

Why Did This Take So Long?

YouTube hesitated to offer PiP for free because they wanted to create incentives for subscribers. The company has been promoting YouTube Premium as a valuable paid option, with PiP being one feature that justified that subscription fee outside the U.S. Offering it for free removes a key selling point. However, YouTube likely concluded that attracting more viewers and keeping them engaged outweighed the potential loss of Premium subscribers.

Apple’s iOS platform supports PiP natively, so YouTube’s previous restrictions were a choice rather than a technical limitation. Essentially, YouTube was disabling a feature that the phone already supported.

What This Means for Everyday Users

If you enjoy watching YouTube on your phone and want to keep a video playing while using another app, you no longer have to pay for it. This is perfect for following a recipe video while taking notes, watching a tutorial while referencing another app, or listening to a podcast-style video while browsing.

However, free users still can’t lock their screens and keep the audio playing. Background play, where sound continues after turning off the display, remains exclusive to Premium subscribers. So, if you want to listen to a YouTube video like a podcast with your phone in your pocket, you’ll still need a subscription or a workaround.

Community Reactions

“Finally. I’ve been using browser workarounds for years just to get PiP without paying. This should have been free everywhere from day one.”

— u/throwaway_techstuff, Reddit r/youtube

“Great but they still won’t give us background play for free. That’s the one I actually want. PiP is nice but background audio is the real ask.”

What To Watch

  • Rollout timing: YouTube says PiP is rolling out now, but global releases usually take days to weeks to reach all users. If you don’t see it right away, check back in a few weeks.
  • Background play pressure: With PiP now free, the community will likely push YouTube to also offer background audio for free users. Keep an eye out for any updates on that.
  • Premium value proposition: YouTube has been steadily enhancing Premium’s offerings, including new AI features. As free features expand, the company will need to keep adding exclusive perks to justify the subscription price.
  • iOS update requirements: Make sure your YouTube app is updated to the latest version to access the feature once it’s available to you.
