If you’re looking to buy medication, one option is to look at online pharmacies. However, it can be difficult to tell if they’re reputable — there are some dodgy sites out there, so it’s important to find a pharmacy that you trust.
If you’re thinking of using an online pharmacy, check out our guide on how to tell if they’re safe. It could save you a lot of bother in the future!
What Are the Potential Dangers?
Untrustworthy pharmacies can have a number of dangers. An obvious concern is that the medication could be counterfeit, or otherwise not approved.
They might also send the wrong medication, or sell it without a valid prescription — of course, both of these are very real concerns. On top of this, they might not protect your personal data. This could include your payment information too, which will leave your finances vulnerable to attack.
Reading Reviews of Online Pharmacies
Although this isn’t a water-tight method on its own, read reviews for online pharmacies as they can be a good indicator of whether the one you’re looking at is a legit online pharmacy or not.
If you see a lot of positive reviews for a pharmacy, look into it further — we’ll explain just what to look for down below.
Are They Licensed?
Have a look at your state board of pharmacy to see if the pharmacy is licensed, or if they have a state-licensed pharmacist on hand to answer any questions you might have.
Alternatively, have a look for the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy’s Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites seal – or the VIPPS seal. If a pharmacy has this seal, it’s proof that they can meet state licensure requirements. You can have a look at the list of pharmacies on the VIPPS website too.
What Else to Look For
Safe online pharmacies will request a valid prescription from a doctor or similar healthcare professional before giving you your medication.
They should also be able to provide a street address — if a pharmacy is supposedly in the US or Canada, double-check that there’s a physical street address. Be wary of P.O. boxes, as these can signify that the pharmacy isn’t located where they say it is.
Keep an eye on the prices they offer, too. Of course, you’ll be hoping for a cheaper price for your medication, but beware of pharmacies offering them unusually cheap — if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Likewise, oddly high prices can be a sign that something’s up, so you’re looking for somewhere with a sensible price.
