How to choose the right bed for your body type – 5 simple steps

The old notion that a hard mattress is good for a bad back is just a myth! The bed can have wonderfully soft comfort and still provide good ergonomic support for your body. Which firmness you should choose has to do with your body shape, sleeping position and which feeling you feel most comfortable with. We guide you in your bed choice.

1. What position do you usually sleep in?

The vast majority of us have a favorite position we are in during the first and most important part of sleep. This is crucial when choosing a bed.

If you sleep on your back or side, you may need a slightly softer bed so that you can sink down properly with your shoulders and buttocks and get relief and support for your back.

If you sleep on your stomach, you need a firmer bed so as not to sink too much with your chest and thus get a sore neck and sway.

2. Assume how your current bed feels

You sleep in a good bed, not on! If you do not sink into your bed, your body will not receive enough support. If you have a sore groin and neck, it may be a sign that you have a bed that is too hard. Then invest in a mattress with the firmness “medium”.

If you sink too much into your current bed and get pain in the hips and back, you should switch to a bed with the firmness “fixed”. But remember that it is you who decides what feels best for you.

3. What is your body type?

Your weight and height are very important when choosing a bed. If you weigh less than 80 kg, you should generally have medium firmness on your bed. If you weigh over 80 kg, you should have a bed with firm firmness.

The center of gravity in the bed becomes more concentrated in a shorter person and it may therefore be better to choose a firmer bed. A taller person of the same weight would feel better with a softer firmness as the person will lie more evenly distributed over the bed.

The standard length of a bed is 200 cm. You should have a good 10 cm above the head and the same amount between the feet and the foot end. If you are over 190 cm, you should therefore choose a bed that is 210 cm long to be able to lie really comfortably even when you are fully extended.

4. Notice the suspension

Pocket springs give the mattress the opportunity to adapt to the body’s shapes and different sleeping positions. They give you the right relief and support for the whole body.

Bonell suspension is the original spring suspension, a simpler spring system. It is not perceived as flexible and adapted to the body’s movements such as pocket suspension, but is usually a cheaper alternative.

5. A comfortable bed mattress puts the crown on the work

The quality of the bed mattress is an important factor to consider when choosing a bed.

A bed mattress that is filled with latex is usually more comfortable but also more expensive than a polyether mattress. Latex is a material with good ventilation and great comfort, it adjusts weight well and has normally seen a long service life.

Today, there are a number of different polyether materials that have good breathability and comfort, but in general, a bed mattress with a latex core is a more comfortable alternative.
