What Are the Different Types of Vapes?

Vaping is around 95 percent safer than smoking, mostly due to the absence of toxins produced when burning tobacco. For this reason, more and more people are transitioning to vaping.

However, new vape users might get surprised by different types of vapes out there. If you’re a new user who wants to quit smoking, which one should you get? What if you’re a long-time e-cigarette user who wants a better experience?

We can’t decide for you, but you can learn all about them to know which one is right for you. Keep on reading to see what the different types are and what are their advantages.

1. Cig-A-Likes

A cig-a-like is a type of vape that resembles a real-life cigarette, hence, their name. It was the first form of vape in the market, and it stayed as the only option for quite some time.

Note, however, that although it’s called that, it can assume the shape of other everyday items. You’ll now find cig-a-likes that resemble pipes, pens, and even USB flash drives.

During its first introduction in 2003, though, it’s made to look and feel like a cigarette as much as possible. It has similar dimensions and weight. It can even taste like a real one.

It has a slim body with two parts: the atomizer + cartridge and the rechargeable battery. The atomizer and cartridge are in the filter part. The rechargeable battery is in the tobacco part.

The tip has a cool feature, too; it’s fitted with a LED light. It lights up whenever you activate it, mimicking the smoldering tip of a cigarette. Its logo is even in the same place as the logos on the conventional ones.

Why would you use an e-cigarette rather than a traditional cigarette or other types of vapes? Take a look at its advantages below.

Easier Transition

Manufacturers believe that by mimicking the look and feel of a conventional cigarette as much as possible, it will be easier to transition from smoking to vaping. It relies on familiarity to get smokers to switch.

After all, it’s not easy to give up smoking, so they need all the help they can get to ease the transition.

No Tar and Carbon Monoxide

Cigarettes produce tar and carbon monoxide, two of the most harmful toxins in smoke. They can deal great damage to your lungs.

Vaping doesn’t produce smoke; in turn, it doesn’t produce tar and carbon monoxide, as confirmed by NHS. This makes cig-a-likes safer than cigarettes.

Note, however, that the vapor produced by e-cigs may still contain toxins. They’re in much smaller (and safer) amounts, though. While it’s much safer than smoking, make sure to use it with care.

Small and Portable

Having the size of a real cigarette has its perks; for one, it’s much smaller and lighter than other vaping devices. This makes it easier to carry everywhere.

It’s nice and subtle; you can hide it in your bag and people around will be none the wiser. It’s easy to carry around in your pocket, as well.

This can be a disadvantage, though, to some who’s prone to losing things.

Low Maintenance

Cig-a-likes are pretty straightforward to use. The disposable ones, you can dispose of once you’re done with it.

As for the rechargeable ones, you only have to refill the canister now and then. When the battery runs out, you only need a USB charger. You can charge it from your computer, use a power bank, or plug it in an electric socket using an adapter.

2. Vape Pens

Vape pens are the second generation vaping equipment, offering better capabilities than e-cigs. They’re not much different when it comes to size, though. True to their name, they’re roughly the size of a pen.

This type of vape is larger than cig-a-likes, which allows it to have a bigger battery capacity. At the time of its release, its use of a new atomizer was innovative.

Because of its bigger body, it lasts longer than an e-cigarette. You can also produce more clouds thanks to its larger size. It now also has a microchip, a safety feature that shuts off the device on automatic.

Its anatomy consists of the mouthpiece, power button, chimney, coil, battery, and a charging port. It can have sub-ohm coils if you so choose a model with that feature. Some also have advanced features like airflow control.

In most models, you can see the tank, so you’ll be able to see how much VAPE JUICE you have left.

Nowadays, vape pens are still popular, even among long-time vape users. It’s still small compared to other types of vapes, so it still has the advantage of being portable.

It has kept up with the latest advancements in technology, so they’re quite useful even today. It has other types, which are as follows.

Fixed Voltage

When vape pens first came into the market, all of them had this configuration. With fixed voltage pens, you don’t need to tinker with the settings. It doesn’t allow you to do so, anyway.

As the name suggests, it has a fixed voltage you can’t adjust. It has a consistent output each time you fire the button.

It’s great for beginners who don’t need to be tinkering stuff. The downside is that with a fixed voltage, you can’t play with cloud production, flavor intensity, and such.

Variable Voltage

Variable voltage pens are the opposite of the above. They allow you to adjust the voltage, which then allows you to adjust your whole vaping experience.

Did you know that flavorings vaporize at different temperatures? This means that you’ll get different flavor profiles by playing around with the settings.

This is one of the major advantages of variable voltage devices. To get even more freedom in the settings, get a vape pen with airflow control. This allows you to control the flavor and cloud production further.

Temperature Control

Temperature control is the solution for adjusting the throat hit. If you don’t like getting dry and burnt hits (which is likely, because no one does), get a vape pen with this feature.

You choose the temperature limit. Depending on the model, you might only have a couple of options: high and low. Some will give you more options but they’re not always necessary.

Once you set the temperature, it will adjust the power sent to the coil to keep it consistent.

3. Vape Mods

Second generation vapes are pretty great on their own, but vapers still wanted a more powerful vaping experience. Cue the release of vape mods, which are much larger and more feature-packed.

The third generation vapes provide a more customizable experience by allowing users to use modifications or mods. They’re for advanced users for the most part, but some models are beginner-friendly enough for those who want to try personalizing the different aspects of vaping.

You’ll be able to customize the pull, hit, flavor, and cloud production in extreme settings. In general, they have more power, better temperature control, and a higher wattage.

You can then switch out some parts to create the experience you want. You can change the coils, for instance, and get a better tank.

The better customization options come with a few sacrifices, though. They’re much larger than an e-cigarette or vape pen. They come in a boxy shape, which is why you’ll also hear people refer to them as box mods.

They’re quite bulky, especially the more powerful ones. The lose the subtlety of smoking a pen-sized vape, which is the price to pay for an enhanced experience.

If you want to graduate from vape pens, familiarize yourself first with the two main types of vape mods:

Regulated Mods

Regulated mods contain a circuit board, which provides additional safety features. It regulates current to prevent things like overcharging or overheating.

It also prevents your device from firing when there’s a short circuit. This protects your battery from damage. It will do the same when there’s improper coil resistance.

Many regulated mods also have a built-in voltage and ohm reader. Using this, vapers can get the correct readings from their coils. This is especially important for new mod builders.

The regulation of the current also leads to higher battery life. This is because it doesn’t let the device pull a high voltage, which can drain the battery faster.

Unregulated Mods

Unregulated mods don’t have those features. They don’t have electrical circuitry as a safety mechanism. They create a circuit by having a cap you need to press to allow current to flow.

This can be dangerous to beginners because there’s no protection from overheating and shorting atomizers. As such, they’re for the advanced users only with advanced knowledge of how mods work.

Unregulated mods have some advantages, though, despite not having safety locks. The lack of restriction gives you more control over the voltage and wattage output. They can use more power so they can better use lower ohm coils.

Because of this, they offer more customization freedom. Still, you shouldn’t ignore the dangers of using it without having the right knowledge.

4. Vape Pods

Vape pods are the latest device in the vaping industry, but that doesn’t mean they’re better. They have different advantages; and if you’re a smoker, you might find vape pods are better for you than vape mods.

Why?

Because pod mods share many similarities with e-cigarettes. At the same time, they have some customization options, too. They’re like a cross between cig-a-likes and vape mods.

There are two different types of vapes in this category: closed pod systems and open pod systems.

Closed pod systems have disposable pods. The pod comes pre-filled with e-liquid, which you then attach to the device. After finishing it, you dispose of it and replace it with another pod.

Open pod systems, on the other hand, are refillable. You have to buy the e-liquid yourself, which comes in bottles.

Don’t worry, they’re quite easy to do. You’ll have to replace the cartridge, though, after about four to five uses.

More Similar to Smoking

You’ll notice that these types are the same as e-cigs’, but pod mods are more powerful. They’re alike mods in that regard and in that they use the same kind of sub-ohm technology.

The only difference is that pods have lesser power and temperature than mods but higher power than e-cig.

This combination makes it the perfect device for nicotine salts. These are naturally-occurring substances found on tobacco leaves. They’re nothing like the nicotine in traditional e-liquids and such.

Nic salts have higher nicotine content. They produce a hit closer to what you’ll get from a conventional cigarette.

That’s why vape pods are more recommended to those transitioning from smoking. They apply the latest technology while giving you a close experience.

Portable and Easier to Use

An advantage of pods over mods is its portability. To give you an image, they’re bigger than e-cigarettes, have more bulk than pens, but much smaller than mods.

Its small size makes it easier to carry wherever. The stylish and sleek look also helps you use it wherever with confidence. It also provides a better grip for when you’re used to holding a cigarette stick.

Pods are much easier to use, but that also means they’re not highly customizable. They’re perfect for an on-the-go lifestyle, wherein you only want to take a hit without meddling with the settings first.

Another advantage is that they’re much cheaper than vape mods. If budget is an issue, you might want to try a pod mod first.

Which of These Types of Vapes is Right for You?

The types of vapes aren’t too diverse, but each one caters to a specific need. If you want customization, go for vape mods. But, if you want an alternative to smoking, pod mods are your best bet.

You can always buy more than one type, so you can switch devices based on mood or need. If you need more tips, you can find more on our guides here. We discuss tips for guns, vaping, CBD, and more!
