Theo’s Thoughts #24: Alternative Leveling Paths

2 min

Well, its that time in the expansion again. Though MoP was packed with a ton of new content, some of which I have yet to experience, I have begun to level some of my other characters to 90. At first, I thought it would not be too bad; my first time leveling through MoP was a magical experience. However, I quickly found that doing these quests over again was not nearly as enjoyable. In fact, I began to find myself relying on dungeons and battlegrounds to earn experience. Anyone who has tried to level this way can agree that it is in no way an efficient way to level. I had never been one to complain about this, but I began to ask myself why? Why is it that for most parts, the only way to level efficiently is to do quests?

The answer to this question may seem simple. Blizzard spends so much time working on these quests, of course they want players to experience it. This makes perfect sense, since the questing in MoP was so much better then that of previous expansions. But what about those players who have already quested through these zones? Is it fair to make them do it all over again?

In my opinion, there should be more options available to players when leveling a second character. Currently, players who have reached Revered with certain factions in MoP will earn experience faster when getting reputation with that faction on other characters. Could this idea work for leveling? I don’t see why not. Once players reach level 90, the rest of their characters could get an experience gaining buff, one that applies to quests, dungeons, and battlegrounds. Having a system like this would do two things. First, it would open up new paths of leveling. In the expansion that was promoted using the term “play how you want” it is kind of strange that there is only one way to level. Secondly, this would also possibly increase the likelihood of questing, since if the questing earned more experience then the first time, players may be more likely to go through select parts of it again.

The idea of only doing select parts brings me to another point. The questing is not too linear in MoP, however, some players feel forced to move onto new zones when possible, since they offer more experience. I think having experience be the same in all zones would help players, since they can choose to quest places they haven’t been, without earning less experience.

This is not a post trying to get rid of questing. It is a vital part of the game, and helps make the story behind WoW as rich as it is.  As I stated earlier, I adored the questing experience through Mists of Pandaria. All I am suggesting is alternative leveling paths for players who have already reached max level on different characters. Whether it be quicker leveling, or just the ability to choose where and how players want to level, without missing out on a way to earn more experience.
