Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops was announced at the Metal Gear 25th anniversary event on August 30. Today we have some first footage of the game in the debut trailer.

Those uninterested in the rapid slashing action antics of Raiden in Revengeance and looking for a pure MGS stealth game won’t be quite so excited at this game – the clue as to why is in the title, “Social Ops”.

Though admittedly there’s still much we don’t know about the game and the trailer here doesn’t offer much more insight, it appears to have a focus on collecting virtual cards. According to Andriasang, players will relive the stories from the previous games in the series – this explains why the cards in the trailer all feature different Metal Gear characters.

The “social” aspect presumably means you can trade cards with friends or perhaps people online. The gameplay is turn-based, which is why stealth veterans accustomed to the live-action gameplay may turn their nose up at this offering. Then again, the Metal Gear label and Snake’s face alone may be enough to sell.

I’m at least interested in the idea, if only to revise on the convoluted plot details of the Metal Gear universe as a nice little distraction. The game is currently only scheduled for release in Japan though, and its coming to GREE platforms in 2012. GREE is a social networking service in Japan, which covers iOS and Android devices.
