Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has already released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to critical acclaim earlier this week in the US and today in Europe. However, followers of all the recent Wii U news lately will know of the Wii U version.
We’ve already seen Super Mario mushrooms increase the size of Tekken fighters from the E3 trailer, but the Nintendo references don’t end there. A new trailer released today shows the Tekken cast dressed as various Nintendo characters. Alternate costumes include those of Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Fox McCloud, Zero Suit Samus, Link, and Princess Zelda. We also see weapons alongside the garments as a fighter swings the Master Sword around.
The trailer also shows more mushroom antics, with mini mushrooms shrinking players, and poison mushrooms which we can guess will damage the player. If you watch closely you can also see a bouncing Invincibility Star which will undoubtedly reward players with temporary immunity to damage when collected, and a Golden Mushroom as seen in the Mario Kart series and most recently New Super Mario Bros. 2.
It’s pretty funny to see the more serious faces of Tekken sporting the plumbers’ dungarees, and even better seeing Alex the velociraptor brawling with Bowser’s spiny shell – the boxing gloves simply weren’t enough. The Tekken series is no stranger to humor, with Tekken Tag 2 featuring the aforementioned dino and a bear, with previous entries also featuring a Panda and a tin man.
This also isn’t the first time Nintendo have granted their beloved characters to fight in other third party fighters. Link was a playable character in the GameCube version of Soul Calibur II.
I for one will be holding out for this Wii U version, as this exclusive content seems like a nice little addition. I’m speculating that this will all appear in a separate “Nintendo mode”. Perhaps Nintendo will return the favor by including a Tekken character or two in the next Super Smash Bros..
