It has been over a year since Brothers in Arms: Furious Four was announced. There has been no news since the game was announced at last years E3; however, there have been rumors that the game was changing significantly from what was originally shown. Now we know that is probably the case, as Gearbox recently announced that Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 will now be an entirely new IP because it has changed so much.
When the game was initially shown at E3 2011, people were making comparisons to Quentin Tarantino Inglorious Basterds. Many fans of previous Brothers in Arms games were not very happy with this new direction that Gearbox was moving the franchise in. Then earlier this year rumors popped up that the game was in trouble because Gearbox had abandoned the trademark. However, now we know the real reason for that, the game will be re-announced some time in the near future with a new name.
Gearbox went on to talk about how much the game has evolved so far from the original concept that it felt only right to “turn it into a new IP”. As of right now, Gearbox has not stated what the new name of the game is or when they will re-announce the game. Gearbox president Randy Pitchford talked about how leaving the Brothers in Arms franchise has allowed them to grow this game in way they couldn’t before, such as adding new game modes and features.
“Our Pokémon has evolved,” he cheerfully explained. “It has different powers.”
This news probably makes a lot of Brothers in Arms fans happy, considering how many of them hated the new tone the franchise was taking. Not to mention Gearbox probably got a little scared off from the fans negative reactions to the re-imagining of Syndicate and the first person shooter XCOM. I am anxious to see what this new title will look like, is it still even set during World War 2 or did they change the setting entirely as well? However, it might be some time before we hear about the game as I don’t see Gearbox talking about it at least until at least a month after Borderlands 2 is released (and that will be the earliest).
