Point-and-click Adventure games have probably had it the most rough with the home console revolution of the past ten years. The demand for the sometimes mind-numbingly difficult puzzles, the wit and charm that came from most games in the genre seemed to drop off — so said game publishers who see it as a lost cause. Something happened this year, though, and that was Double Fine’s Kickstarter campaign for the still-untitled Double Fine Adventure game. It not only met its lofty funding goals, but it created a whole new way for game developers to work the system and create the kind of games that they want to.
It inspired others to do the same, and since then we’ve seen wave after wave of Kickstarter campaigns for games who have seen a similar fate with big publishers, or games that developers are so passionate about that they don’t want someone else’s hand in the creative process. Revolution Software has announced, through Kickstarter, that their next project is a long-awaited follow-up in the Broken Sword series; Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse. Of course, what is truly interesting about this is the project was literally just announced and the funding is already at $131,000 and growing, once again showing that gamers are hungry for adventure titles and passionate enough about them to put their money where their mouths are.
The goal for this Kickstarter campaign is $400,000, which seems modest considering that Revolution has spent $500,000 already on the development of the game and that this Kickstarter is simply to help them finish up production. The game will have pre-rendered 2D backgrounds with 3D characters to help give it a fresh presentation while not sacrificing the classic look and feel of adventure games. So go ahead and head over to their Kickstarter campaign and help make yet another adventure game become a reality, if, of course, that is your thing.
