For Playstation 3 owners, the PlayStation Plus service does kind of pay for itself sometimes, doesn’t it? Part of what is great about the PlayStation Network is that if you want to play games online, it is completely free, as are using apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus and many others. This is a stark contrast from Xbox Live’s service, which gives you access to those things and not much in the way of perks. If you opt to pay Sony for their PlayStation Plus service, you get a whole lot of cool stuff while you are a member; including access to early betas, free games, discounts on downloadable content and games and a lot more. If you are one of those PlayStation Plus members, you can right now get your hands on the Dust 514 beta until September 4th.

Dust 514 is an interesting concept of a game, made by CCP Games, the people behind the popular Eve Online game for PC. Dust 514 is a really gorgeous MMOFPS set in the Eve Online universe; which means you’ll be continuing on with the story developed by Eve Online, so you better brush up on that before you dive into this. Long story short is that humanity used up planet Earth and set out to colonize the milky way using faster-than-light travel. They found a wormhole along the way that led to an empty galaxy, fit for habitation, until that wormhole closed up and left those settlers cut off.

Dust 514 connects to Eve Online and will be free-to-play on the PS3, which is a still new concept in the console world. All of the battles will take place on locations within the Eve Online world, so in a way, it is like an expansion for Eve Online, but on the PS3. There will be in-game transactions, using both a “real” currency and an in-game currency. The real money can be spent on cosmetic stuff, while the in-game stuff is how you move forward with your character in the game. So if you are a subscriber, go ahead and hop in and take it for a test run to see how it all works.
