Science fiction writers have long warned humanity about the dangers of technology and the reliance upon it, but sometimes it feels like no one has really been paying attention. Technology continues to advance all of the time, including the field of artificial intelligence, or the art of making a computer able to perform functions and think for itself. While there might not be much to be alarmed about just yet with artificial intelligence and the human race, we can confirm that a programmer has worked at training a computer AI to play classic Nintendo titles, and that this computer AI can probably play Super Mario Bros. better than you would imagine it could, as well as a few other classic Nintendo games.
It is an interesting experiment because it shows something that an entire generation knows like the back of their hand and showcases how a computer program can adapt to play Super Mario Bros. better and better over time. Of course, it doesn’t work well with all games, so you’ll be glad to know that we are still a ways off from SkyNet and the apocalypse because this computer AI cannot play Tetris to save its life.
