If you haven’t noticed there have been a couple or so rumors floating around about the next generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony. Just last week there was a rumor going around that we were weeks away from Sony announcing their next gen console. However, today instead of a rumor we actually have a quote from Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai that goes against that latest rumor.
Hirai in an interview with The Times basically came out and said Sony will let Microsoft make the first move when it comes to the next generation consoles. Hirai stated:
“Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?”
I understand what Hirai is going for, but this just does not seem like a realistic statement. For instance, most people assume that Microsoft will announce their next generation system at E3 or right before. Does this statement mean that Sony then waits until after E3 to announce their new system, so they can match or increase the power of the PS4?
There is no way Sony would reboot their whole hardware design to match Microsoft’s next gen console. There just wouldn’t be enough time to change the specs of their next gen console that fast and still release it within 2013 or probably even early 2014. Not to mention the amount of money Sony would lose on revamping the console to meet new specifications. In other words, even though this news comes directly from the head of Sony, I would take it with a grain of salt.
