The Wii U has not lived up to the Wii’s standards, in terms of sales, it just hasn’t matched what the Wii did when it first came out in 2006. When the Wii came out, you couldn’t find a single Wii on store shelves, unless you preordered one, you had to wait weeks before you could even spot a Wii in a store. This isn’t the case with the Wii U, its not hard to find one at all. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata recently stated in an interview with Reuters, that the sales weren’t bad, and that the Wii U is selling steadily. Nintendo claimed that the Wii U sold 400,000 on launch week, which is great, but its not as good as the Wii.
Most of the sales have been going towards the black deluxe model, which comes with a lot more in the box. Storage, various accessories, and Nintendo Land are the main reasons why people have sprung for the deluxe edition rather than the standard version. This was the first time that Nintendo has released two different versions of a new console on the same day, and Iwata said this caused a problem in manufacturing. Most would obviously take the deluxe version, and they had to balance the manufacturing for both versions, this could have easily affected the sales as well.
