A lot of people tend to not take gaming on mobile devices all that seriously because of the prevalence of games like Angry Birds, yet it is hard to argue with the sheer numbers that Rovio is able to deliver with their mega-series. Lots of people who call themselves gamers now grew up in a world that involved the Marios, Sonics and Links of the world, but the reality of today is that most households have some form of smartphone, tablet or device with a mobile operating system on it that can play games like Angry Birds. Those cute little birds have become the big characters of this generation, and before you grumble about lack of character development or depth, remember that Mario’s introduction to the world was in Donkey Kong and that he wasn’t exactly the Mario that we know now.

Over the span of December 22nd – 29th Rovio reports a massive number of 30 million new downloads within the series, which spans multiple games and mobile platforms. This is, of course, just for mobile platforms using iOS or Android, and not stuff like Roku, Facebook, gaming consoles and wherever else you can find Angry Birds stuff. This includes over 8 million downloads on Christmas Day alone. Damn.
