The 10th-anniversary release of Grand Theft Auto 3 last year caused quite a stir in the mobile gaming community. While in itself it was a great achievement to port the classic game to handhelds, it also paved the way for rumours about the future of GTA on handhelds. Would the game’s acclaimed follow-ups, Vice City and San Andreas, receive similar treatment?
The resounding answer to that question has now been confirmed, and it’s a yes.
Rockstar have just announced on their website that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will also be getting the 10th Anniversary treatment, and an iOS and Android version of the game is due out this fall.
As well as bringing the full game to handhelds in full HD glory, the game will also feature
a limited run of collectable promotional items will be made available for purchase through the Rockstar Warehouse, with select items also available via online giveaways.
On top of that, Rockstar have also announced that Vice City will feature several as-yet unspecified enhancements ‘unique to the iOS and Android platforms.’
For many, including myself, there was something special about Vice City that made it stand out from other GTA games. It was the only GTA game (unless you include the ancient GTA: London) that had a distinctly retro feel, being set in a sun-soaked replica of 80s Miami.
The campy colours, even campier music, and some of the most colourful characters in the series gave Vice City a special place in the hearts of many nostalgics, and its re-release on iOS and Android in a matter of weeks could well be the most exciting handheld game release ever.
