The first details have emerged for CD Projekt Red’s next game a RPG set in a cyberpunk universe. The game will be called Cyberpunk 2077 and is actually based off Mike Pondsmith’s pencil-and-paper RPG system Cyberpunk 2020. In fact Pondsmith will actually be working with CD Projekt Red on the game. Here is what the studio had to say about adapting the pencil and paper Cyberpunk 2020:

“Adapting pen & paper rules to video game is not as easy as it can appear at first glance. The flexibility of an in-person RPG has to be replaced with a strict set of rules. Every skill, attribute and game mechanic has to have a clear definition and place in the game, For hardcore Cyberpunk 2020 fans out there, twiddling with rules in such a way may seem like blasphemy. But rest assured that we are working very closely with Mike Pondsmith to ensure that the unique feel of the original, paper game is preserved intact.”

The game will have many of the same qualities that made the Witcher 2 such a critical and commercial darling last year. Cyberpunk 2077 will feature a ”multi-thread, non-linear story” where players will actually have the ability to visit famous areas from Cyberpunk 2020. Cyberpunk 2077′s game director Mateusz Kanik had this to say about the game:

“While still working on The Witcher 2, we started thinking about creating a huge RPG set in a sci-fi world, We wanted to take the universal values we used in the game about Geralt and show them from a different perspective. On top of that, we had plenty of ideas for features that couldn’t be implemented in The Witcher simply because they didn’t fit in the setting.”

Not much else is official about the game other than what is mentioned in the press release, which hints at things to come but nothing official. Even though I don’t know much about the game I have to say just the fact it is coming from the talented people at CD Projekt Red my expectations are sky high.

Not to mention I love cyberpunk settings for games and movies but for some reason I think it has been somewhat of an underutilized setting. For those of you that are like me and want to get the most up to date information on Cyberpunk 2077, you can go the the game’s official website here.
