Minecraft Dungeons 2 Officially Announced, Coming 2026

·

Mojang announced Minecraft Dungeons 2 during the first Minecraft Live event of 2026. The action-RPG sequel is set to launch this year on PC (Steam and Xbox app), PS5, Nintendo Switch 1, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The original Minecraft Dungeons debuted in May 2020 and quietly attracted a large following. It offered a Diablo-style loot system wrapped in the familiar block aesthetic of the series. Mojang promises “loads” of loot in this sequel, which ties back to the core loop that kept players grinding through the first game’s dungeons and its DLC expansions.

This announcement took many by surprise. Mojang hadn’t hinted at a sequel before, and the original game’s live-service updates ended in 2022 after six DLC packs. The four-year gap between the end of active development and this announcement suggests the studio has been working on this sequel behind the scenes rather than just updating the existing game.

According to PC Gamer’s coverage, the trailer introduces the new story with the line: “With peace restored, all was well until it wasn’t.” This marks a clean break from the first game’s conclusion, establishing this as a true sequel rather than just a remaster or expansion. The simultaneous multi-platform release, including support for Nintendo Switch 2, shows that Mojang aims to reach the widest audience possible from day one.

No price or specific release date has been announced yet. The original game launched at $19.99 and reached over 10 million players across platforms in its first year, according to Microsoft. Eurogamer confirmed the multi-platform rollout. Meanwhile, Nintendo Life reported that both Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions are in simultaneous development — a strong commitment, especially with the recent launch window for Switch 2.

By The Numbers
Original Game Launch May 26, 2020
Original Game Peak Players (Year 1) 10M+ across platforms
DLC Packs Released (Original) 6
Active Development End (Original) 2022
Platforms Confirmed (Sequel) PC, PS5, Switch 1, Switch 2

Community feedback for the original game remains strong, even years after its last update. One Steam reviewer, who invested a lot of time into the first game, highlighted the co-op experience. They noted that the loot system kept sessions going well beyond what the relatively short campaign would suggest. Players frequently mention the block-art visual style and accessible difficulty as reasons for returning to the game with friends and family.

What To Watch

  • Pricing and release date: Mojang has confirmed a 2026 window but hasn’t given a specific date or price. Keep an eye out for a State of Play or follow-up during Minecraft Live — the original launched at $19.99, so expect a similar or slightly higher price due to market changes since 2020.
  • Co-op and live-service structure: The first game supported four-player co-op and had paid DLC for two years before going silent. Whether the sequel will launch with a live-service roadmap or as a more complete standalone product is an important question.
  • Switch 2 feature differentiation: With simultaneous releases for Switch 1 and Switch 2, it raises the question of whether the newer hardware will feature exclusive enhancements or improved performance modes — something Mojang hasn’t addressed yet.
