Mortal Kombat X: Johnny Cage Joining the Roster is Awesome

It was recently rumored, and now it is finally confirmed that Johnny Cage is officially a part of the Mortal Kombat X fighter roster. Speaking to IGN, the game’s senior producer, Adam Urbano, confirmed that Johnny Cage will be a playable character. Previously, there were leaked images online showing older versions of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade in what looked to be cut scenes for the game’s Story Mode. I had a hunch that if NetherRealm Studios constructed character models and designs of old Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade for Mortal Kombat X, there was a good chance those characters would be playable for the actual game. Now, that turns out to be true. Johnny Cage is a classic character who goes back to the beginning of Mortal Kombat history, so he is another wise choice to add to the character roster.

When Cassie Cage was first announced, I was not sure what that meant for the older characters of Mortal Kombat lore. While Scorpion and Sub-Zero were shoe-ins for the game, I figured that perhaps, certain Mortal Kombat characters were going to be left behind. Honestly, I did not have too big of a problem with that. I was ready to see the game present some new characters. The key to any fighting game is to provide players with a mix of old and new characters. Initially, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of certain characters in Mortal Kombat 3. Those issues were fixed with the game’s update in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

Johnny Cage will appear in the game as a much older and battle-hardened character. Apparently, he got together with Sonya Blade at some point, and the two had a daughter named Cassie. It should be fun to see if he and Sonya will still be together. Sometimes, writers and creators avoid the convention of a character growing older and having kids, since that tends to “age” the character or make him less relatable. I do not necessarily agree with that notion. I am going to enjoy seeing the new tricks old Johnny Cage has learned and come up with. It should be fun to see Johnny Cage with a daughter who is a leader in the new story. Cassie Cage definitely looks like a chip off the old block.

Mortal Kombat X is due out on April 14. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
