Warner Bros. Interactive and NetherRealm Studios have released the latest trailer for Mortal Kombat X, which reveals another classic character joining the game’s roster–the Edenian princess known as Kitana. Like Kung Lao, Kitana is yet another character who apparently died in Mortal Kombat 9, but has now returned from the dead.
It will be very interesting to see how the characters’ resurrections are explained in the game. Yes, some of the characters who were killed were shown as undead revenants for Quan Chi, but will that always be the case? Kitana’s appearance suggests that somehow, she has broken free from Quan Chi and is no longer an undead revenant. The trailer is edited almost like a new story trailer. It follows a much different format than previous video releases. This time, there is no voice-over narration by the producers explaining the attacks and style of Kitana. There is some dialogue showing the thunder god Raiden saying, “Where you have been Kitana?” Another clip shows Quan Chi smugly asking, “Finally found a way to kill me?” Kitana flatly replies, “I know of many.” The latter exchange is probably from pre-fight intro dialogue and not necessarily part of the actual story campaign.
The video also shows some brand new footage of Kung Lao in the game. Lao was another character who died in the last game, but it appears that he has returned. He was recently confirmed for the game. Not that the deaths of the characters is a huge problem for a supernatural fantasy martial arts video game series. Most of the characters in the franchise have probably died and come back at some point. Just as in super hero comics, death is usually never final for Mortal Kombat, especially when necromancers like Quan Chi are roving around.
The trailer contains some great new footage of Kitana in action using her trademark deadly war fans. The footage even showcases Kitana’s new bloody, gory and glorious new fatality. She slices off her opponents’ hands. Then, she jams the fans down over the opponent’s head, cutting it off in two nasty chunks. This certainly looks like it will be the goriest, most violent Mortal Kombat installment ever. It really should not be any other way.
Mortal Kombat X is due out later this spring on April 14. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
