Nintendo Shadow-Drops Pikmin Day Direct, Reveals Hello! Pikmin

Sarah ChenBy Sarah Chen·

Nintendo surprised everyone with a dedicated Nintendo Direct for “Pikmin Day.” According to Polygon, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced a new project called Hello! Pikmin during the presentation. The Direct also shared updates on other Nintendo franchises.

As of now, Nintendo has officially declared November 1 as Pikmin Day. Nintendo Life explains the reasoning: 1/1/1 represents three ones, like three Pikmin. While the outlet wasn’t entirely convinced by the joke, the date is set in stone.

This Direct came out of nowhere. IGN called it a surprise reveal, noting that Nintendo “has apparently decided that’s a thing now.” This marks the first time Nintendo has linked a Direct to a franchise holiday of this magnitude.

Hello! Pikmin takes center stage. So far, reports confirm the title and Miyamoto’s involvement in the announcement. However, details about platforms, release timing, and gameplay remain unclear. We’ll have to wait for Nintendo to provide more information.

The format is also unique. A Direct focused solely on one franchise, launched on a self-proclaimed holiday, gives Pikmin a spotlight usually reserved for Nintendo’s biggest titles. Pikmin has often been a mid-tier franchise, and this treatment indicates Nintendo might be looking to elevate its status.

Community Pulse

As of publication, community data wasn’t available, so this reflects early reactions from the press. IGN’s remark that Nintendo “has apparently decided that’s a thing now” perfectly captures the mix of humor and surprise. Nintendo Life kicked things off with a dry “Yes, Pikmin Day,” showing that even the Nintendo press was taken aback by the holiday.
