Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gets Zelda Crossover on Switch

Marcus WebbBy Marcus Webb·

Nintendo is set to launch a Legend of Zelda crossover in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This gives players without a Switch 2 a chance to join the fun. According to DualShockers, this event coincides with the release of the Switch 2 exclusive remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which many can’t access.

The timing is intentional. Ocarina of Time connects to Nintendo’s newer hardware, while the New Horizons crossover allows the original Switch players to celebrate Zelda. Launched on March 20, 2020, New Horizons has been around for a while. It’s still one of Nintendo’s most prominent live-service offerings.

Siliconera’s piece, titled “Animal Crossing: New Horizon Has Legend of Zelda Designs”, highlights design content as the main focus of this crossover. It looks like we’ll see cosmetic or decorative Zelda-themed items instead of new gameplay features. Unfortunately, the sources we reviewed didn’t specify which items will be available, how long they’ll last, or how players can unlock them.

This move aligns with Nintendo’s trend of cross-promoting its franchises within Animal Crossing. The game’s customization tools make it a perfect fit for licensed designs. Plus, the Zelda tie-in keeps players who haven’t upgraded their hardware engaged.

OpenCritic has also picked up the DualShockers story, showing that this crossover is catching attention beyond just Nintendo-focused media.

Community Pulse

We didn’t capture any community sentiment signals for this story, so we don’t have player quotes to share. The overall sentiment tag is “mixed,” but without any data points, that label doesn’t tell us much. We’ll update with player reactions as soon as we see Steam-style reviews, forum threads, or social media posts that provide concrete feedback.

What To Watch

  • Item details and availability: Keep an eye out for Nintendo’s official announcement on which Zelda designs are part of the crossover and how long it will be available.
  • Switch 2 sales impact: See if Nintendo uses the New Horizons event to boost Ocarina of Time sales or to keep original Switch owners engaged.
  • More crossovers: If another franchise tie-in occurs, it’ll confirm New Horizons as Nintendo’s go-to platform for cross-brand promotions.
