Pokémon Unite Will Shut Down March 23, 2027 After Nearly Six Years

Sarah ChenBy Sarah Chen·

The Pokémon Company will shut down Pokémon Unite on March 23, 2027, ending the free-to-play team battler after almost six years. Polygon reports that the company announced this closure for spring 2027.

Pokémon Unite debuted on Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2021, with mobile versions arriving on September 22, 2021. By the March 2027 deadline, the game will have been active for about five years and eight months. Polygon simplifies that to five years, while other reports say it’s nearly six.

Nintendo Life views the news as the end of service for the Switch version. However, it’s unclear if the iOS and Android versions will also close on the same date. We’ll update this story once The Pokémon Company provides more details.

Unite featured a 5v5 objective-based format centered around Pokémon rather than typical MOBA characters. With its free-to-play model, the shutdown marks the end of a live-service title, not a paid game. Currently, we don’t have information about what will happen to in-game purchases or any unspent currency.

This announcement matters because the game is part of one of the most recognizable franchises in the gaming world. The March 2027 end date gives players nearly a year of notice, assuming the timeline remains unchanged.

What To Watch

  • Mobile status: We’re waiting for confirmation on whether the iOS and Android versions will close on March 23, 2027, or follow a different timeline.
  • Purchase cutoffs: We need to see if The Pokémon Company will stop real-money sales before the final date and what will happen to any remaining in-game currency.
  • Final content plans: We’ll look out for any announced events, rewards, or changes to competitive play leading up to the shutdown.
