Marvel Rivals Reveals 50-Player PvE Mode Against Thanos

Marcus WebbBy Marcus Webb·

NetEase Games has shared the first glimpse of a new Marvel Rivals PvE mode, where 50 players team up to battle Thanos, inspired by the epic final showdown in Avengers: Endgame, as Polygon reports. This marks a dramatic shift from the traditional 6v6 competitive format that attracted the game’s audience.

The scale of this mode is impressive. A 50-player co-op match surpasses the usual 12 players in a standard Marvel Rivals game. Polygon describes the footage as chaotic, which is fitting for a mode designed for a multitude of heroes taking on one boss.

However, details remain scarce. The footage didn’t come with a release date, and NetEase hasn’t provided information on rewards, hero limitations, or how matchmaking will work in such a large lobby. These factors will determine if the mode becomes a staple or just a temporary event.

This announcement follows a wave of Thanos-related content. The Season 10 update was released on September 11 with Patch 1.72/1.000.107, according to MP1st. Season 10.5 also introduced an Infinity War mode and changes to Doctor Strange builds. A showdown with Thanos continues this trend.

Moreover, this new mode arrives as Marvel’s film slate garners interest. The Direct is already analyzing the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer, and Marvel Rivals is capitalizing on this cinematic momentum to enhance its live-service offering.

Recently, the studio has faced challenges outside of gameplay. Marvel Rivals upgraded from PEGI 12 to PEGI 16 due to gacha mechanics. Additionally, NetEase reversed a ban wave affecting mods and restored the impacted accounts. Introducing a popular PvE mode gives the team a chance to shift the conversation away from monetization and enforcement issues.

By The Numbers

By The Numbers
Players in new PvE mode 50
Players in a standard match 12 (6v6)
Steam rating 76% positive
Steam review count 305,456
Current players 50,922

Community Pulse

The community sentiment across ten tracked signals leans positive. However, the Steam reviews we analyzed show a negative tilt, mostly focusing on ranked play rather than PvE. One reviewer expressed dissatisfaction, stating: “this is the worst game ive had the displeasure of playing in my life i got 37k damage and still lost.” This complaint attributes ranked losses to team disparities. A cooperative mode without opposing teams could alleviate that frustration, which might contribute to its appeal.

What To Watch

  • Release timing: NetEase hasn’t announced a date yet. Keep an eye out for patch notes or a seasonal roadmap that includes the mode.
  • Technical performance: Fifty players plus a boss will put pressure on servers and client frame rates. Early impressions will reveal if it performs well.
  • Player retention: The game currently has 50,922 concurrent players. A sustained increase after the mode launches would indicate that PvE can attract returning players.
