Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Reviews Land With Early Praise

Alex MercerBy Alex Mercer·

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign launched in early access on October 16, and initial reviews are looking good. GamesRadar’s review-in-progress states that “spectacular set pieces make this campaign hard to put down,” labeling it as “one of The Good Ones.”

Players who pre-ordered the game digitally can access early content, according to Pure Xbox. This early access has allowed various outlets to dive into the story mode ahead of the full game release.

IGN takes a more cautious approach. Its campaign review mentions that Modern Warfare 4 “may not have quite enough to be considered amongst the very best Call of Duty campaigns.” However, it notes, “at least it’s going out on a high note” if this marks the end of the saga.

PC Gamer’s review-in-progress describes it as “a fractured, fun campaign that benefits from looking backward.” The headline is straightforward: this is a campaign you shouldn’t miss. Both PC Gamer and GamesRadar are still working on their final assessments, so conclusive ratings are coming soon.

The campaign length is manageable. Game Rant’s guide estimates the story takes about 7 to 9 hours, fitting the series’ tradition of shorter, set-piece-driven narratives.

The Switch 2 version is also part of the discussion. Nintendo Life’s impressions say the console “does its best” with what it calls “one hell of a ‘popcorn game.'” This marks the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform in nearly 13 years, since 2013’s Ghosts on Wii U.

There’s no player sentiment data yet, so critics are shaping the discussion. The general feeling is that the campaign entertains but doesn’t bring much new to the table. IGN describes it as a solid farewell that doesn’t reach the heights of the series’ best entries, while Nintendo Life’s “popcorn game” label suggests it’s big, loud, and easy to complete in a sitting or two.

What To Watch

  • Final scores: GamesRadar and PC Gamer still need to finalize their reviews.
  • Player reception: Keep an eye on user reviews as pre-order players wrap up the 7-9 hour story, especially regarding pacing.
  • Switch 2 performance: Nintendo Life’s comments hint at some compromises, and further technical analysis will reveal how significant those are.
