Resident Evil 2 Remake Gets Fan-Made Couch Co-Op Mod

Sarah ChenBy Sarah Chen·

A modder has created a playable couch co-op mod for Resident Evil 2 Remake. This mod adds a multiplayer mode that Capcom didn’t include in the 2019 game. According to TheGamer, this project is part of a larger fan effort to bring back the co-op aspect of the franchise.

The original game was strictly single-player. Capcom introduced two-player campaigns in Resident Evil 5 (2009) and Resident Evil 6 (2012). However, they shifted the series back to solo survival horror. The RE2 remake follows that solo design, and this mod changes things for those who want a second controller in the room.

This release fits a trend. GameGPU reports that Resident Evil 4 Remake has also received a major mod for co-op gameplay. Now, two Capcom remakes feature fan-built multiplayer, but neither has official support for it.

The demand for such mods makes sense. Resident Evil 2 Remake boasts a 91 Metacritic score and a 96% positive rating based on 81,954 Steam reviews. A game that well-regarded sees frequent play, and a co-op mod offers fans a fresh way to enjoy it.

Player activity shows the community is still engaged. The game had 5,236 concurrent players at the time of writing, over seven years after its January 2019 launch. Any mod that offers those players a new experience has a built-in audience ready to jump in.

Modding is also gaining institutional support. NVIDIA recently announced the winners of its $50,000 RTX Remix mod contest. While this contest focuses on visual improvements rather than gameplay changes, it demonstrates that big companies now see community mods as valuable content. Capcom hasn’t commented on the co-op projects mentioned in the sources reviewed.

This mod arrives as Capcom’s franchise is thriving commercially. Explosion.com recently reported that Resident Evil has surpassed Final Fantasy as the top Japanese franchise not on Nintendo. Fan-made features like this one help extend the life of a catalog that’s already performing well.

By The Numbers
Release date January 25, 2019
Metacritic score 91
Steam reviews 96% positive (81,954 reviews)
Current Steam players 5,236
Current Steam price $39.99

Community Pulse

Overall, community sentiment around the game is quite positive based on the 10 signals we tracked. One Steam reviewer humorously described the game’s errand-chain structure: “Alright, I need a key to get out of here. Let’s go. The key is in the West Office. The West Office is locked with an electronic lock.” This puzzle-box design makes having a second player exciting. Two people can divide the fetch quests or debate over who forgot the code.

What To Watch

  • Capcom’s response: The publisher hasn’t addressed either the RE2 or RE4 co-op mods in the sources reviewed. Typically, silence surrounds single-player mods, but any takedown would change that.
  • Stability and feature updates: Co-op mods for games designed for single players often require ongoing fixes. Keep an eye out for changelogs that address AI behavior, camera handling, and save support.
  • A third remake mod: With RE2 and RE4 already covered, Resident Evil 3 Remake and Village are likely next on modders’ lists.
