The Port That Promises Too Much

Why PC Gamers Hit This Problem Specifically

When a PC gamer connects their computer directly to a soundbar via that HDMI port, they’re usually trying to skip the TV altogether. A shorter cable run, lower latency, and simpler setup all sound good. But ARC doesn’t work that way—it’s meant as a return path from a TV, not as an input from a PC.

What usually happens is the soundbar either shows no signal or accepts the connection but downgrades the audio quality significantly. You might not even notice unless you’re listening closely or check the soundbar’s display, which may indicate “PCM 2.0” (basic two-channel stereo) when your game is set to output surround sound.

If you’re connecting a PC, the best approach is to run HDMI from your PC to your TV or monitor. Then, use the TV’s eARC output to send audio to the soundbar. This way, the TV manages the handshake between your PC and the soundbar, which is exactly what ARC was designed for. It adds a step, but it works.

Alternatively, optical audio cables (the small square connectors that transmit light) are a reliable fallback for soundbar connections, though they max out at Dolby Digital 5.1 and won’t support newer formats either.
