EverQuest Legends Adds Kerran Cat Race to Reboot’s Roster

Alex MercerBy Alex Mercer·

EverQuest Legends, the reboot of Daybreak Games’ 1999 MMO classic, has confirmed that the Kerran will be a playable race. These feline humanoids were fan favorites in the original game but got sidelined in later expansions. This reveal, shared exclusively by Variety, is one of the more intentional nods to the franchise’s roots as Legends shapes its character roster.

EverQuest debuted on March 16, 1999, and received an 85 on Metacritic. This success helped set the standard for subscription MMOs before World of Warcraft changed the game in 2004. At launch, the original featured 12 playable races, but the Kerran were missing. They appeared as NPCs but never made it onto the character creation screen in the base game.

EverQuest Legends aims to bring back that original feel instead of offering a modernized version. Bleeding Cool highlighted the project’s goal of allowing players to “return to EverQuest as you originally played it.” The inclusion of the Kerran is a meaningful design choice, addressing a long-standing omission rather than just adding new elements.

This reboot also caters to solo players, marking a major shift from the original’s demanding group-play model. This design change, confirmed in early April 2026, suggests Legends wants to balance nostalgia for veteran players while being accessible to newcomers who haven’t camped for six hours just to get a single item drop.

The original EverQuest currently holds an 80% positive rating on Steam, based on 2,419 reviews, and sees around 391 concurrent players. This small yet persistent audience keeps the 26-year-old title alive. Ubisoft Entertainment is involved with Legends, providing much more marketing support than Daybreak has historically offered the franchise.

By The Numbers
Original EverQuest Launch March 16, 1999
Metacritic Score (Original) 85
Steam Review Score 80% positive
Steam Reviews Total 2,419
Current Concurrent Players 391

Community sentiment toward the original game leans heavily on nostalgia, often to an intense degree. One Steam reviewer summed up the existing playerbase’s feelings: “Looking back, you think, I could have made better decisions. The first one you lose your virginity to, she’s aging now, and it shows. The time spent, neglecting everyone else for her. The missed schoo[l]…” This poignant quote highlights the deep attachment Legends hopes to revive.

What To Watch

  • Full race roster reveal: With the Kerran confirmation, expect a staged rollout of playable races. Keep an eye on whether Legends matches, exceeds, or intentionally reduces the original game’s 12-race lineup.
  • Solo vs. group balance details: The promise of a solo-friendly design needs more specifics. How Legends manages content difficulty will be key to keeping veterans satisfied without alienating them.
  • Ubisoft’s monetization model: The original EverQuest currently doesn’t have a listed price on Steam. Whether Legends will be subscription-based, buy-to-play, or free-to-play will be a crucial decision for a franchise with a complex monetization history.
