AMD Frame Generation Breaks in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Alex MercerBy Alex Mercer·

According to benchmark testing from GameGPU, AMD’s ML-based Frame Generation technology is causing serious rendering issues in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This problem affects AMD GPU users trying to leverage the upscaling feature to enhance frame rates in Ubisoft’s open-world action game, which debuted on March 20, 2025.

Frame Generation works by inserting AI-generated frames between the rendered frames. This approach aims to double the perceived frame rates without a significant increase in GPU load. However, when it malfunctions, users often experience artifacting, frame pacing problems, or complete rendering corruption. These issues can completely negate the performance benefits that the feature is supposed to provide.

AMD markets this technology as part of its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) suite, directly competing with Nvidia’s DLSS Frame Generation. High-profile failures like this one lead to sharp comparisons between the two systems, especially since Nvidia’s version has a proven track record across major game releases. The timing couldn’t be worse for AMD. The company has been promoting FSR 4 and its ML-accelerated features as a way to challenge Nvidia’s dominant position in the upscaling market.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already faced a rocky period after its launch. The game received its final story content update in June 2026, with Ubisoft concluding the title’s live-service cycle alongside the addition of an Arena Mode. A separate update in June hinted at the return of a beloved character, suggesting Ubisoft is tying up narrative threads while keeping some open. A technical failure affecting a key GPU feature in one of the year’s biggest releases is certainly not the farewell either company hoped for.

It’s still unclear if the issue stems from Ubisoft’s implementation of AMD’s SDK or from the driver stack itself. As of now, AMD hasn’t released a public statement or timeline for a hotfix. Ubisoft’s update frequency for Shadows has significantly slowed since the game reached its end-of-content status, raising questions about how quickly either party will prioritize a fix.

By The Numbers
Game Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Developer / Publisher Ubisoft
Release Date March 20, 2025
Current Steam Price $0.49
Community Sentiment Mostly Negative (10 signals)

Frustration in the Shadows community goes beyond just the Frame Generation bug. One Steam reviewer stated: “Avoid. If you hunt for 100% completions, be ready to spend $90 USD in DLC for the last achievement.” Complaints about aggressive DLC monetization appear frequently in recent reviews, adding to technical concerns and driving overall sentiment firmly negative. A game priced at $0.49 on Steam — down from its original $70 launch price — clearly shows how much player interest and goodwill have diminished.

What To Watch

  • Driver fix or game patch: Keep an eye on AMD’s driver release notes and Ubisoft’s update logs to see which company delivers a fix first, and how long it takes. That timeline will reveal a lot about their commitment to post-EOL support.
  • Broader FSR Frame Generation compatibility: Watch for reports from GameGPU or other hardware outlets to see if they find the same failure in other titles using AMD’s ML Frame Generation. This would suggest a systemic driver issue rather than just a Shadows-specific bug.
  • AMD’s FSR 4 reputation trajectory: Major failures in prominent releases can hinder both developer and consumer adoption of a GPU feature. Monitor how many upcoming titles commit to AMD Frame Generation support in the next two quarters.
