Diablo 4 Season 14 Overhauls Gem Crafting Grind

Alex MercerBy Alex Mercer·

Diablo 4’s endgame loop for gem farming and conversion has seen a big change in Season 14. Blizzard updated the recipes to reduce the tedious grind that has frustrated players since the game’s launch.

Many players have criticized the gem progression system in Diablo 4. Upgrading gems to higher tiers used to require gathering hundreds of lower-tier materials. The inefficient conversion recipes led some players to avoid optimizing their gem slots altogether.

Season 14, which launched with Patch 3.1.0, directly addresses these issues. This update also introduced a Solo Self-Found mode and a collaboration with Overwatch, but the gem changes are the standout improvement that many endgame players will notice right away. The introduction of SSF mode shows that Blizzard is paying attention to different player types, which is a positive shift.

Additionally, Season 14 has made the Necromancer class more competitive after it had struggled for months. These back-to-back balance updates suggest that the development team is tightening their feedback loop as they plan for the future beyond the current seasonal structure.

The player count presents a mixed picture. Currently, Diablo 4 has 25,182 concurrent players on Steam. That’s a solid number for an ARPG outside of its launch window. However, the game’s Steam reviews are only 68% positive based on nearly 25,000 reviews. This is a stark contrast to the 90 Metacritic score it received at launch. Over time, the gap between critic reviews and player feelings has widened, partly due to ongoing technical issues.

By The Numbers
Metacritic Score 90
Steam Review Score 68% positive
Total Steam Reviews 24,989
Current Steam Players 25,182
Current Price (Steam) $29.99

Heading into Season 14, community sentiment is largely shaped by a different frustration. One Steam reviewer noted: “Most recent update has completely broken Steam Deck compatibility. Blizzard knew about the issues from the PTR but chose to ignore them. For a game heavily marketed as being great on Steam Deck…” This complaint echoes throughout recent reviews. While the gem changes may enhance the endgame experience, Blizzard has a more pressing issue to resolve for its handheld player base.

What To Watch

  • Steam Deck fix timeline: Blizzard hasn’t provided a public ETA for the patch addressing the compatibility issues that came with the Season 14 update. Their response time will test the credibility of the game’s marketing for handheld users.
  • SSF mode adoption: Solo Self-Found is a new feature in Diablo 4 and popular in other ARPGs like Path of Exile. It’ll be interesting to see if it attracts returning players or keeps seasonal participants engaged, which could help Blizzard expand the game’s audience.
  • Seasonal momentum: With two consecutive seasons bringing important class balance changes and system updates, the key question is whether Season 15 will keep up that momentum or return to the slower pace that characterized much of 2024 and 2025.
