Sony Will Stop Making PlayStation Game Discs in 2028

Ava MitchellBy Ava Mitchell·

Sony just announced it will stop producing physical game discs for PlayStation starting January 2028. From then on, digital downloads will be the only way to get new games.

This shift marks a significant end to physical game ownership as we’ve known it for years. While games released before January 2028 will still be available on disc, any new releases after that date will only be accessible as digital files bought through the PlayStation Store or other digital outlets.

What’s Actually Changing

Currently, when you buy a PlayStation game, you have two choices: grab a disc at a store or download it digitally. Starting in 2028, that option for new releases will vanish. Sony will no longer make game discs, so every new title will need to be downloaded to your console’s storage.

Think about how music changed. For years, you could buy a CD or download an MP3. Then streaming took over, and physical albums disappeared from major retailers. Sony is doing something similar with games, but they’ve set a firm deadline.

This also ties into another change: Sony is closing its PlayStation Store on the PS3 and PlayStation Vita in certain markets. The PS3 store will shut down in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua starting in August, with other regions likely to follow. The Vita store is facing a similar fate. Those older consoles relied heavily on digital purchases, so losing the store means losing access to games that may not be available anywhere else legally.

Why Sony Is Doing This

The gaming industry has been shifting toward digital for quite a while. Digital sales are cheaper to distribute—there’s no disc to press, package, or ship. This model also eliminates the used game market, so every sale goes directly to publishers and platform holders, rather than places like GameStop or individual sellers.

Sony hasn’t provided a detailed public reason for this timing, but the company has been promoting digital-first hardware for some time. The PlayStation 5 launched with a disc-free “Digital Edition,” and the PS5 Pro released in 2024 without any disc drive. The 2028 deadline gives the industry about two years to adapt.

What This Means For You

If you typically buy physical games, here’s how things will change:

No more reselling. Digital games are linked to your account. You can’t sell a downloaded game at a used game store or trade it with a friend like you could with a disc. Every purchase is permanent and non-transferable.

Storage becomes a bigger issue. Modern PlayStation games often exceed 50 to 100 gigabytes. Without discs, your console’s internal storage and any external drives will fill up much more quickly. You might end up spending more on storage expansion over time.

Internet is now required to buy games. If you live in an area with slow or unreliable internet, downloading a 100GB game could take hours or may not even be feasible. Physical discs allow you to install a game without a lengthy download process.

Game preservation gets harder. Discs don’t expire, but a digital license depends on Sony keeping its servers running and your account in good standing. If Sony ever shuts down the PlayStation Store entirely (like with the PS3 and Vita), games that only exist digitally could become inaccessible.

Prices may not drop. Competition from physical retailers has historically kept game prices in check. Without that pressure, publishers might be slower to discount digital titles.

Community Reaction

“Physical media is the only true ownership. Once they shut down the servers, your ‘library’ is gone. I’ve been buying discs specifically because of this.”

“Honestly not surprised. They’ve been building toward this since the PS5 Digital Edition. Still annoying for collectors though.”

What To Watch

  • August 2026: The PlayStation Store will close on PS3 in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Keep an eye out for Sony to announce more markets and a broader timeline for PS3 and Vita store closures.
  • Late 2026 to 2027: Expect retailers like GameStop and Best Buy to start reducing their physical PlayStation game inventory as the 2028 deadline approaches. Look for liquidation sales.
  • January 2028: This will mark the official end of new physical PlayStation game production. How Sony manages the transition, especially regarding pricing and storage solutions, will be interesting to watch.
  • Longer term: Microsoft and Nintendo haven’t announced similar plans yet. If physical sales remain strong on competing platforms, Sony might feel competitive pressure over this decision.
