Grinding Gear Games has activated the “Martyr of the First Edict” mechanic in Path of Exile 2 for the first time. They crowned a player named cArn after he voluntarily deleted a level 100 character — the game’s highest level. This act rewarded every other character in the game with a free passive skill point.
This mechanic creates a community-wide buff triggered by individual sacrifice. When a player reaches level 100 and deletes that character permanently, GGG can designate them as a Martyr, and the bonus affects everyone globally. It’s a zero-sum game for the Martyr but a net positive for all others. This unusual design choice turns self-destruction into a public service.
The timing is crucial. GGG released Patch 0.5.0 — Return of the Ancients in May 2026, which revamped the entire endgame system of Path of Exile 2, including Atlas progression, Maps, and Waystones. In this new endgame setup, passive skill points have real power implications. Thus, that free point holds significant value for any character tackling high-tier content, rather than being just a cosmetic gesture.
Reaching level 100 in Path of Exile 2 isn’t easy. The experience curve during the final levels is intentionally tough, with death penalties costing hours of progress. For cArn to voluntarily delete that character shows a major time investment made for the sake of others. This kind of community moment is exactly what GGG designed the system to create.
Path of Exile 2 is still in early access, and GGG has been expanding its scope following the endgame overhaul reported by PCGamesN. The original Path of Exile has an 86 Metacritic score and boasts 88% positive reviews from 141,582 Steam users. This gives GGG a solid foundation of credibility as they develop the sequel.

Community sentiment around Path of Exile 2 has turned negative in recent Steam reviews. One common criticism hits at the heart of the time investment issue: “Don’t waste your time. Life is passing you by. You don’t get paid to play. The creators do. There is an incentive mismatch.” The Martyr system doesn’t resolve that tension; it may even deepen it. It asks one player to invest hundreds of hours into a character they’ll ultimately erase. However, it does reframe that investment as beneficial for the wider player community.
What To Watch
- Future Martyr activations: Keep an eye on whether GGG crowns more Martyrs in the current patch cycle. The frequency of this mechanic will show how central it is to the game’s community design in the long run.
- Endgame balance following 0.5.0: With the Atlas and Waystone systems recently reworked, watch for changes in meta builds due to the free passive point at high-tier map content.
- Early access roadmap: GGG has indicated plans for further expansion beyond 0.5.0. The timing of the next major content announcement will reveal how close the game is to a full 1.0 release.
