Netflix’s One Piece Remake Gets Only 7 Episodes for Season 1

Marcus WebbBy Marcus Webb·

Wit Studio’s The One Piece — Netflix’s ambitious remake of the beloved long-running anime — will cover the first 50 chapters of Eiichiro Oda’s manga in just seven episodes when it premieres in 2027. This pacing raises important questions about the project’s overall scope and goals.

Those 50 chapters account for about half of the East Blue Saga. This means season one ends at an awkward narrative midpoint, rather than a satisfying conclusion. For reference, the original 1999 anime adaptation took around 61 episodes to tackle the same material, albeit with plenty of filler. Compressing it down to seven episodes is a drastic shift.

The situation looks even more concerning when you think about the full breadth of One Piece. Oda’s manga has over 1,100 chapters after 27 years of publication, and there’s no confirmed endpoint. If they continue at this pace of around 50 chapters per season, they’d need more than 20 seasons for a complete adaptation. Even if they pick up the pace in later arcs, the numbers don’t favor the show unless Netflix commits long-term, which is a concern given their history of cancelling ambitious anime projects.

Wit Studio has solid credentials. They produced the first three seasons of Attack on Titan before handing it over to MAPPA. Their production quality is top-notch. However, the real issue lies in the structure: as Polygon highlights, seven episodes that cut off midway through the introductory saga suggests either a cautious Netflix investment strategy or a production plan that hasn’t fully grasped the vastness of the source material.

TheGamer points out that cramming 50 chapters into seven episodes compresses some of One Piece’s key storytelling elements. The arcs that introduce Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji as a crew are crucial. Rushing through this foundation could weaken audience investment in these characters before the narrative reaches its famous mid-series arcs.

By The Numbers
Season 1 Episode Count 7
Manga Chapters Covered ~50 (of 1,100+)
Original Anime Episodes for Same Material ~61
Planned Release Year 2027
Seasons Required to Complete at This Rate 20+

Fan reactions have been mixed, with a skeptical lean. The announcement of the episode count sparked immediate comparisons to Netflix’s past with long-form anime adaptations. Many in the One Piece community are questioning whether seven episodes can truly deliver the emotional impact that the East Blue Saga is famous for.

What To Watch

  • Netflix’s renewal commitment: Whether Netflix has greenlit multiple seasons at once or views this as a test run will impact the project’s chances of adequately covering the source material.
  • Episode runtime: If Wit Studio plans to create feature-length episodes — around 45 to 60 minutes each — the seven-episode format could make more sense. Official announcements about runtimes will significantly change the pacing discussion.
  • Streaming performance targets: Netflix’s benchmarks for renewal are often unclear. Keep an eye out for any public comments from Netflix or Wit Studio regarding season two development, as that would indicate the project has solid backing.
