Diablo 4 Players Are Pushing Blizzard to Rework Strongholds

Alex MercerBy Alex Mercer·

Diablo 4’s Stronghold system has drawn a lot of criticism from players, who are calling for a major overhaul almost two years after its launch in June 2023. Complaints have surged across Reddit, Steam forums, and community hubs. Fans feel that the content feels like a one-off experience in a game designed for endless replayability.

Strongholds are specific open-world locations that players clear once to turn into settlements or waypoints for good. The issue, as many community members point out, is that after that first clear, there’s little incentive to return. In an action RPG where the endgame loop is key, having static content that becomes irrelevant after one visit clashes with the seasonal systems and the Pit.

This feedback comes after several successful community campaigns that have prompted Blizzard to make changes. In early May 2026, players managed to get War Plans progression made account-wide. The team has also been working on the loot filter system after hearing widespread complaints. This trend suggests Blizzard might be more open to feedback as they head into Diablo 4’s later seasons. The push for a Stronghold rework could gain more traction now than it would have at launch.

The timing is crucial. Path of Exile 2’s Return of the Ancients expansion has been delayed to May 29, giving Diablo 4 a short window without its main competitor vying for player attention. Blizzard has a history of using these gaps in competitor schedules to roll out updates or announcements, although no official changes to Strongholds have been confirmed yet.

The game currently holds a 90 on Metacritic but has only a 68% positive rating across nearly 24,000 Steam reviews. This split tells a clear story. While critical reception at launch was strong, ongoing player sentiment has waned over time. Players frequently cite performance issues and a lack of fresh content. Strongholds highlight a systemic problem that grows more apparent over a lengthy live service cycle. The more time players invest, the clearer the content’s limitations become.

By The Numbers
Launch Date June 6, 2023
Metacritic Score 90
Steam Review Score 68% positive (23,919 reviews)
Current Steam Players 50,598
Current Price (Steam) $29.99

Recent Steam reviews show a sharp decline in community sentiment. One reviewer stated bluntly: “Unplayable laggy piece of trash, stay away.” While performance issues and content fatigue are separate problems, they exacerbate one another. Players encountering technical issues are less likely to tolerate systems they already find lacking.

What To Watch

  • Blizzard’s official response: Keep an eye out for any developer updates or seasonal roadmaps that mention Stronghold changes. The success of the War Plans account-wide initiative shows that community pressure can lead to results.
  • Season 13 population trends: Season 13 already hit Paladin builds with significant nerfs in May 2026. If the number of concurrent players on Steam drops further from the current 50,598, Blizzard will feel increased pressure to implement systemic improvements beyond just balance patches.
  • Competitive window: With PoE2’s expansion delayed, Blizzard has a brief opportunity to keep players who might otherwise leave. How they choose to address Strongholds or focus on other areas will reveal how seriously they’re taking player feedback.
