Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred’s Torment Tier Falls in 17 Hours

Alex MercerBy Alex Mercer·

Less than 17 hours after Diablo 4’s Lord of Hatred expansion launched its toughest difficulty tier, a Sorceress player had already cleared it. This dedicated player skipped sleep entirely to achieve this milestone. The accomplishment, reported by PC Gamer, highlights just how quickly the game’s most committed players dissect and conquer new content.

The Sorceress has been a strong contender in Diablo 4’s endgame meta, and Lord of Hatred’s revamped Skill Tree seems to have further solidified that standing. The expansion revamped progression systems for all six classes, but the changes mainly benefitted specific builds. These builds excel at scaling damage quickly in high-difficulty scenarios.

According to Game Rant’s analysis of the Skill Tree update, the Necromancer also came out ahead from the rework. The new node structure has opened up fresh synergies for minion and bone builds. Still, the speed record held by a Sorceress suggests that this class remains the fastest when it comes to raw clear speed.

The 17-hour clear presents a striking insight for Blizzard’s difficulty design team. If players can conquer the new hardest tier before most have even finished a night’s sleep, it raises serious questions about the endgame’s longevity. This has been a point of criticism for Diablo 4 since its launch in June 2023. The game currently boasts a 90 on Metacritic but has only 67% positive reviews out of 22,848 Steam ratings. This gap shows a persistent divide between critical reception and long-term player satisfaction.

With 28,586 players active on Steam at the time of writing, Lord of Hatred has clearly attracted a surge of players. Whether this momentum lasts beyond the initial weeks largely hinges on the content available after the difficulty tier that fell before day one ended.

By The Numbers
Time to conquer new hardest tier 17 hours
Metacritic score 90
Steam positive review rate 67% (22,848 reviews)
Current Steam players 28,586
Current price (Steam) $49.99

Community sentiment around the expansion has been mixed at best. One recurring Steam review simply states: “Bend over for the Blizzard pricing model.” This line appears often enough to indicate a real point of friction between players and Blizzard’s monetization strategy. While this tension isn’t new, expansions priced on top of a $49.99 base game keep the issue alive.

What To Watch

  • Blizzard’s difficulty response: Whether the developer decides to hotfix or rebalance the new hardest tier after the 17-hour clear will show how seriously they’re addressing endgame challenge design.
  • Class meta stabilization: With the Sorceress achieving the first clear and the Necromancer identified as a Skill Tree beneficiary, keep an eye on community-driven tier lists as more data comes in over the next two weeks.
  • Player retention curve: The current Steam player count indicates a post-launch surge. However, Diablo 4 has historically seen sharp drops after initial content spikes. The 30-day retention figure will truly test Lord of Hatred’s staying power.
