Helldivers 2 Update 6.2.2 Adds Two Biomes, Overhauls Balance

Alex MercerBy Alex Mercer·

Arrowhead Game Studios has released the Machinery of Oppression update, version 6.2.2, for Helldivers 2. This update adds two new biomes and implements significant balance changes to a game that still enjoys over 65,000 concurrent players on Steam, more than a year after its launch in February 2024.

The new biomes offer more environmental diversity during missions, although Arrowhead hasn’t provided details on all the ecological zones included in the update. Both IGN and Game Rant describe the balance changes as major. They suggest that the adjustments to weapons and enemies are substantial enough to impact the game’s meta rather than just making minor tweaks.

This update comes at a challenging time for Helldivers 2. The game joined Xbox Game Pass in March 2025, which expanded its audience but also frustrated some existing players. This rollout followed a rough period in community relations due to controversial changes regarding the PSN account-linking requirement in mid-2024.

Despite these issues, player numbers remain strong. Steam’s concurrent player count is at 65,783, a number most live-service shooters would envy after 14 months. However, the game’s 81% positive rating from 800,209 Steam reviews shows a divide among players. This is a stark contrast to the near-universal acclaim the game received at launch.

Arrowhead’s pace of content delivery has sparked ongoing debate. While updates like Machinery of Oppression show that the studio is committed to the game, it remains unclear if the frequency and scope of changes will satisfy a community that has openly criticized the game’s direction over the past year.

By The Numbers
Steam Concurrent Players 65,783
Steam Review Score 81% positive
Total Steam Reviews 800,209
Current Steam Price $39.99
Game Release Date February 8, 2024

Feedback about the 6.2.2 update leans negative. One Steam reviewer, who has experienced the game’s ups and downs over two years, stated they “can no longer in good conscience recommend this game to the average person.” This sentiment shows up frequently in recent reviews, indicating that the current discontent comes from long-term players rather than newcomers.

What To Watch

  • Balance reception: It’ll be interesting to see if the 6.2.2 weapon and enemy adjustments stabilize or create further division within the community. Steam review trends over the next two to three weeks will provide insight.
  • Biome integration: We still need confirmation on how the two new biomes will fit into the ongoing Galactic War. It’s also unclear if they’ll introduce dedicated mission types or unique enemy compositions, which calls for a closer look at Arrowhead’s post-launch updates.
  • Retention data: With Game Pass adding new players in March 2025, Arrowhead’s next updates on player counts will reveal if this expansion is sustainable or if it experiences the same decline seen with the original Steam player base.
