CD Projekt Red is set to roll out the Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro update on April 8. This update brings three different graphics modes for owners of the PlayStation 5 Pro. This shift comes after the studio previously stated that no such patch was in the works.
The update features Ray Tracing Pro, a fully ray-traced rendering mode aimed at maximizing the Pro hardware’s capabilities. CD Projekt Red claims the visuals are “incredible,” as highlighted in their communications about the patch.
Players will also get a Performance Mode that targets up to 90 FPS. This is a notable upgrade for a game that typically runs at 60 FPS on consoles. A third mode provides options for players, allowing them to choose between visual fidelity or frame rate. GamingBolt confirmed all three modes ahead of the launch.
This patch comes at no cost to existing owners, which is significant given the game’s current price of $59.99 on Steam. CD Projekt Red’s change of heart regarding the Pro update is interesting. GameSpot reported that the studio initially stated there were no plans for PS5 Pro support after the console’s launch. Something must have shifted—whether it was player demand, changing internal priorities, or new opportunities for hardware optimization—and the studio decided to move forward with the update.
Cyberpunk 2077 debuted in December 2020 amid considerable technical challenges, especially on last-gen consoles. Since then, the game’s recovery has been quite impressive. It now enjoys an 88% positive rating based on nearly 400,000 reviews on Steam and has around 28,500 concurrent players on PC alone. Polygon notes that the Pro update marks another phase in its ongoing technical improvement.
| PS5 Pro Update Launch Date | April 8, 2026 |
| Graphics Modes | 3 (Ray Tracing Pro, Performance, Standard) |
| Performance Mode Target | Up to 90 FPS |
| Steam Review Score | 88% positive (397,020 reviews) |
| Current Steam Concurrent Players | 28,544 |
| Original Release Date | December 10, 2020 |
The community’s feelings toward the base game remain quite positive. One Steam reviewer captured why the game continues to attract players years after its launch: “Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t about chrome, guns, or Night City. It’s about what’s left of you when everything else gets stripped away. The city is loud. Violent. Relentless. But what stays with you is the quiet.” This emotional depth helps explain why a RPG from 2020 still draws nearly 30,000 concurrent players on a single platform in 2026.
What To Watch
- How well the 90 FPS Performance Mode maintains its target during Night City’s most demanding open-world moments. Frame pacing will reveal the true performance after launch.
- CD Projekt Red’s updates on whether they’ll roll out similar Pro-level updates for other titles in their lineup, including The Witcher 4.
- Data on player preferences regarding which of the three modes gets the most use. This will indicate how console players balance ray tracing quality with high frame rates in open-world RPGs.
