Starfield Free Lanes Update Launches April 7 With PS5 Version

·

Bethesda has dropped a final overview trailer for Starfield’s Free Lanes update, confirming it will launch on April 7. This update arrives alongside the new Terran Armada expansion and the much-anticipated PlayStation 5 version of the game.

The overview trailer showcases several new features for the space RPG, such as Cruise Mode, Interdictions, and enhanced ship and base upgrade options. Cruise Mode seems to simplify travel between systems, while Interdictions add a new layer of space combat by allowing or forcing encounters mid-route.

The Terran Armada expansion will launch at the same time as Free Lanes, bringing new content along with the structural update. Bethesda hasn’t revealed the expansion’s price separately from the base game, which currently retails for $49.99 on Steam.

The PS5 release represents a major shift for a title that debuted exclusively on Xbox Series X/S and PC in September 2023. It’s unclear if this console version will attract new players. On Steam, Starfield has only 55% positive reviews out of 115,805 ratings, a disappointing score for a major Bethesda RPG. Currently, around 5,520 players are active on Steam, a small fraction of its initial launch numbers.

Bethesda seems to be counting on Free Lanes to tackle key feedback about gameplay, particularly the repetitive elements of space travel. Game Rant’s details suggest that the studio aims to introduce meaningful choices and challenges in flight systems, which many players criticized at launch. Whether these changes can improve the game’s image is the main question as we approach April 7.

By The Numbers
Release Date September 6, 2023
Free Lanes Update Date April 7, 2025
Steam Review Score 55% positive (115,805 reviews)
Current Steam Players 5,520
Metacritic Score 88
Current Steam Price $49.99

Community feelings about the game trend negative as the update nears. One Steam reviewer voiced a common frustration: “Worlds are Empty. Storyline is Mid. Bugs everywhere. NPCs Walk through walls. Combat is Basically just Fallout 4 with Magic. Looks Like the game was made in 2016.” This feedback, focusing on barren environments and reused mechanics, is exactly what the new traversal and combat systems in Free Lanes aim to address, at least in part.

What To Watch

  • Whether the PS5 launch leads to a noticeable increase in player counts and changes the Steam review trend after April 7.
  • The pricing and content scope of the Terran Armada expansion — if it’s paid content instead of a free update, expect some backlash from a skeptical player base.
  • How Cruise Mode and Interdictions perform under scrutiny from the community after the update — Bethesda needs these features to feel substantial, not just cosmetic.
