Albion Online Coming to Xbox Series X|S in April

·

Sandbox Interactive has announced that Albion Online will be available on Xbox Series X|S in April 2025. This marks the first time the free-to-play MMO will hit console hardware. As reported by Windows Central, the release will be an exclusive for Xbox, leaving PlayStation players out of the loop for now.

Originally, Albion Online launched on PC in July 2017 and later extended to mobile platforms. The Xbox release will be the game’s first console adaptation in its eight-year journey. This represents a notable shift for a title built around cross-platform play between PC and mobile.

This move makes a lot of sense for Sandbox Interactive. Since Albion Online is free-to-play, it removes the cost barrier that often hinders MMO adoption on consoles. Plus, Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem supports cross-play, allowing Xbox players to connect with the existing PC and mobile communities instead of joining separate servers.

The big question remains whether the controller-based interface can handle Albion Online’s features, which include open-world PvP, a player-driven economy, and guild warfare. The game has confirmed an April release window per TheXboxHub, but we still don’t have a specific date as of now.

On Steam, Albion Online boasts a 74% positive rating from 26,378 reviews, putting it in the “Mostly Positive” category. That’s solid but not exceptional for a game in its eighth year. The Xbox version could significantly boost its active player base, which currently sits at around 5,000 concurrent players on Steam. This number doesn’t include players on mobile and the standalone client.

Over time, community sentiment about the game has become more critical. One Steam reviewer praised the game’s initial appeal but pointed out the issues that arise with prolonged play: “It is very painful for me to do this review, since I loved this game while discovering it, but the cracks kept showing as I went on.” This sentiment highlights a common theme in long-term player feedback, where the game’s expansive world draws players in, but monetization and progression challenges drive them away.

What To Watch

  • Cross-play implementation: Sandbox Interactive needs to clarify whether Xbox players will share servers with PC and mobile users or if they’ll have separate pools. This decision will affect how quickly the new console player base can engage in PvP and economic activities.
  • Specific April release date: The studio has confirmed the launch month but not the exact day. An official date announcement will likely coincide with a wider marketing campaign and might include details about Xbox Game Pass integration.
  • PlayStation response: With the current Xbox exclusivity, a large audience remains untapped. Keep an eye out for announcements regarding a PS5 version, especially if the Xbox launch performs well in its first 30 days.
