The Next Sequel is Coming: The Most Anticipated Follow-ups to Your Favorite Movies

3 min

Sequels of previous top-grossing and popular movies have been the talk of the town forever. The frenzy states that the talk isn’t over yet and here’s why.

Avengers: Endgame was released in 2019 where it grossed an incredible $2.7 Billion at the box office. It is now the highest-grossing film of all time.

Now the question is, just like Avengers: Endgame, are filmgoers going to see a sequel just as catastrophic!? While the future holds the answer to that, a few guesses, however, can be made.

1. Super Mario Bros. Movie 2

The game inspired a movie from Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” which went on to take the stage in 2023. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was produced by Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo and directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. It went on to gross over $1.3 Billion at the box office—giving a big hint towards its sequel.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will come around 2026 or even longer. The lead roles will be voiced by Chris Pratt. Other characters have the same roles as the prequel since no character died in the movie. Some new characters are also going to debut in the sequel.

The sequel’s plot has yet not been defined. A lot of the prequel went into the plot making of its sequel’s story. However, in two instances, the post-credit scenes in the movie give an alarming gist of the sequel’s plot.

The first post-credit scene entails Princess Peach’s castle where a shrunken Bowser is trapped in a cage. Jack Black’s Bowser isn’t just a fan favorite, Bowser is also a core part of the story, being a formidable foe. It certainly looks like he’ll be back to cause more trouble in the sequel.

The second post-credit scene shows that the beloved green dinosaur, Yoshi, will make his appearance in the film’s sequel as in the scene, a Yoshi Egg was left behind in Brooklyn. This portrays the debut of Yoshi in the upcoming sequel.

2. Inside Out 2 (2024)

Pixar has stood up to its name as an emotional storytelling powerhouse. Directed by Pete Docter and Co-directed by Ronnie Del Carmen, Inside Out was one of the very first oddly realistic animated movies. And now, Inside Out 2 is set in motion!

The movie cast for voice actors will likely be the same as before, Amy Poehler (Joy), Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Richard Kind (Bing Bong), Bill Hader (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger), Mindy Kaling (Disgust), Kaitlyn Dias (Riley). A few more are to be expected as the characters Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment are coming to Inside Out 2.

Inside Out 2 gives a very realistic and uninterrupted depiction of a teenager’s life and ups and downs. Riley is now 13 years old and the teenage battles are going to begin.

3. The Adventures of Tintin: Red Rackham’s Treasure

The Adventures of Tintin or Tintin was directed by Peter Jackson in 2013. The movie was one of the finest animated pieces of the time. The sequel to the movie, Tintin 2, or The Adventures of Tintin: Red Rackham’s Treasure is rumored to release on February 19, 2027. It will feature three of Hergé’s books Adventures of Tintin.

The cast is yet to be announced. But Andy Serkis and Jamie Bell will likely have the lead roles in the sequel.

There they seek to find a cure for seven scientists who were cursed. One of the scientists is their dear friend, Professor Calculus. He was also the one to find ‘Rascar Capac,’ the mummified remains, and bring them back to Europe.

4. Sherlock Holmes 3

The two prequels to Sherlock Holmes 3 were directed by Guy Ritchie and so will the sequel. Both the first two movies jammed up $1 Billion at the global box office in comparison to a $215 Million production budget. The revenue hinted Sherlock Holmes is a jaw-dropping franchise.

The stars in the sequel will be Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes. With his trusty friend, Jude Law’s Dr. John Watson as they unravel new mysteries.

There’s no official release date for the sequel yet, however, it is one of the most anticipated sequels. Sherlock and Moriarty fell off the balcony into Reichenbach’s falls in the prequel, and hence, Sherlock was presumed dead.

However, right at the end of the movie, Sherlock disguises himself on Watson’s chair in his office using one of his camouflage suits as he peeks at Watson’s memoir. Sherlock then adds a question mark after, “The End,” interestingly, setting up the base for a sequel, Sherlock Holmes 3.

5. The Nun 3

James Wan’s spin-off of The Conjuring franchise is The Nun, taking place a few decades in Europe, before The Conjuring, in the 1950s. The Nun focuses on a specific entity, Valak, the demonic nun, played by Bonnie Adams, who will likely get the role in the sequel as well.

The main story will likely revolve around the cast, Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene, Jonas Bloquet as Maurice/Frenchie, and Storm Reid as Sister Debra with a few other characters.

The plot isn’t well defined right now but there is still space for a sequel after The Nun 2 and Valak’s horrific return to seek ultimate power.

In the ending scene of the prequel, after Sister Irene has saved Maurice from Valak’s possession and banished her back to hell, there’s still a fleeting look of worry on her face as if she can’t believe that Valak is gone for good. This gives a gist that The Nun 3 might be coming to the box office in the coming years, probably in 2026 at the earliest.
