In a heart wrenching interview, Meghan Markle has revealed that her British friends initially discouraged her from dating Prince Harry; warning her about the extreme tabloid culture she would be subjected to in the United Kingdom. Markle shared this with ITV presenter, Tom Bradby, ahead of the airing of the couple’s exclusive ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey which spotlighted the royal family’s charitable initiatives in Africa.
It is fair to say that Markle has endured her share of media scrutiny since meeting Prince Harry in July of 2016; with a few scandals in the press forcing the couple to file several lawsuits. While no member of the British Royal Family would expect to have a normal life Dating in Wales or England, the young couple still deserve to have their privacy and well-being respected.
The Duke and Duchess’ Heart Wrenching Revelation
Speaking with Bradby, Markle shared that when she first met Harry, her friends told her, ‘I’m sure he’s great, but you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life’. Markle then shared that she naively didn’t understand how brutal the tabloids could be.
Markle also opened up about her personal well-being, admitting that it has ‘really been a struggle’ to deal with being a newlywed and a new parent under intense public scrutiny.
Markle is not alone in her frustrations, Prince Harry also shared with Bradby that he ‘won’t be bullied into playing the game that killed my Mum.’ Harry’s, mother, Princess Diana, tragically died in a car accident while being pursued by paparazzi.
Dating in Wales: Not a Typical Experience for Meghan Markle
The couple originally met in July of 2016 and then in November of 2016, Harry confirmed in a formal statement that that he and Markle were officially dating. Reminiscing about the early days of the relationship, Markle has later stated, ‘We had a good five, six months almost with just privacy, which was amazing.’
Back in 2016, Harry also pled with the media to leave Meghan alone and stop the ‘wave of abuse and harassment’ towards her. Unsurprisingly, this plea didn’t work as the couple have dealt with continued harassment and disinformation spread by the press regarding Meghan’s personal life, particularly with regard to the intimate and complicated relationship with her parents.
Taking Time Off
For the Royal Family, Dating in Wales and England under the public eye is anything but normal. The constant media attention, scrutiny, and pressure would be too much for anyone to handle – let alone a newlywed with a five month old baby. That’s why it is understandable that the couple is reportedly taking a few months off to spend some much needed quality time together.
Some would argue that the intense media pressure is just part of the ‘gig’ of being in the Royal Family, however in a recent interview with The Sunday Times, family friend and Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, defended the couple stating, ‘All members of the royal family are under a pressure that none of us outside it can possibly imagine’.
Welby continued by saying, ‘I don’t know why it should be a point of criticism that they take leave to spend time with a new baby in the way that the law provides for every single employee in this country’. It is reported that the couple will take this time off towards the end of the year and return to their royal duties in 2020.
