History of Lacrosse

The sport is based on games played by diverse Native American communities as early as the 12th century. Its current form, however, dates back to the 17th century according to records from Jesuit missionary priests in the territory of modern-day Canada. French missionary Jean de Brébeuf coined the term “Lacrosse” (the stick in French) in 1637 when he saw tribesmen playing the game in present-day Ontario. Today, the sport is extremely popular in North American while the first World Lacrosse Championship was held in 1967. The WL (World Lacrosse) was founded in 2008 to serve as the governing body of the sport, and currently, has 62 members from every continent on the planet.
