Sustainable Power Methods and Why You Should Use Them

2 min

As scientists continue to make revolutionary advancements every day, it’s difficult to allow yourself to remain ignorant. With many worldly issues being talked about on a daily basis in the media, the ethical decision of whether to adapt to new information or to deny it is one that many adults must now face. This newfound responsibility has its pros and its cons, as people can choose either to face the facts of reality, or choose to focus on things that are immediately affecting them. In the postmodern era, the concept of truth seems to be relative to one’s personal beliefs and preconceived notions of the world – especially when it comes to climate change.

Philosophy aside, there are plenty of individuals striving to attain sustainability, in order to eliminate their individual carbon footprints. While it’s all but hopeless for everyday consumers to assume that their individual actions will collectively be enough to counteract the pollution and environmental destruction of corporations, the peace of mind and knowledge that one is leaving no shameful legacy behind for future generations is compensation enough. That, and the money that one can save by being proactively green.

One sustainable power method that has been discussed much as of late is solar power. By harnessing the energy of the sun’s rays, humankind can power anything run by electricity. Solar panel fields are becoming a more common site worldwide, especially in the European Union. In the summer of 2018, solar power replaced fossil fuels as being the UK’s number one source of energy. Solar energy has repeatedly been the most favored source of energy production among EU citizens. If the US amassed a measly 21,000 square miles of land and covered it in solar panels, it would produce enough energy to power the entire country. And while that may sound like a lot of land, it would only account for 0.6% of the country’s land mass. Just cut a rectangle out of Texas! Everything’s bigger there, including their solar farms. In addition to solar farms, if you enjoy camping and want to remain sustainable without the use of any fossil fuel generators, you can invest in a solar powered one. There are numerous products available on the internet, so it won’t be too hard for you to find the best portable solar generator available.

Besides solar energy, another form of renewable power comes in the form of wind turbines. Although having been criticized for their aesthetic and loud noise made, this is another case where the pros far outweigh the cons. One country in particular in the European Union, being Germany, actually produced so much electricity in 2017 that there was a surplus of it, causing the government to pay its citizens to use up said surplus. Additionally, many of the criticisms against wind farms are completely unfounded. One major critique is that the price of wind technology is overly expensive. However, not only is this untrue when comparing the environmental effects of fossil fuel usage, but the cost of wind energy is lowered everyday by scientific advancements. Ignore the ignorance. Embrace change. Invest in a renewable energy source today.
